A method of forming a wrapped-around shielded perpendicular magnetic recording writer pole is disclosed. A structure comprising a leading shield layer and an intermediate layer disposed over the leading shield layer is provided, the intermediate layer comprising a pole material and a dielectric material. A trench is formed in the dielectric material. A non-magnetic layer in the trench is removed via an ion beam etching process. A seed layer is deposited in the trench and over the pole material. A magnetic material comprising a side shield layer is deposited on at least a portion of the seed layer.

Method of forming a fully wrapped-around shielded PMR writer pole

A method provides a magnetic transducer having an air-bearing surface (ABS) location. An intermediate layer having a substantially flat bottom surface is provided. A trench is formed in the intermediate layer. The trench is wider in yoke region than in the pole tip region. The trench has a first depth in the yoke region and a second depth less than the first depth in the pole tip region. A portion of the intermediate layer is at the bottom of the trench at the ABS location. A nonmagnetic layer is provided. The nonmagnetic layer fills part of the trench in the pole tip region such that the trench has a third depth less than the second depth at the ABS location. A main pole is provided. The main pole has a leading bevel adjacent to nonmagnetic layer in the portion of the pole tip region of the trench.

Method for fabricating a magnetic write pole having a leading edge bevel

A method and system provide a shingle magnetic write transducer. The transducer has an air-bearing surface (ABS) and includes a main pole and at least one coil. The coil(s) are configured to energize the main pole. The main pole includes a leading surface, a trailing surface, and a plurality of sides between the leading surface and the trailing surface. At least one of the plurality of sides form a sidewall angle with a down track direction. The sidewall angle is less than thirteen degrees and is at least zero degrees. In some aspects, the sidewall angle is less than a maximum skew angle for the data storage system.

A method and system provide a magnetic transducer. The transducer includes a main pole, a side gap, at least one coil, a side shield and at least one of a leading shield, a trailing shield and a return pole. The coil(s) are configured to energize the main pole. The side gap is between the main pole and the side shield. The main pole is between the leading shield and the trailing shield. The trailing shield is between the main pole and the return pole. The side shield is between the leading shield and the trailing shield. At least one of the leading shield, the trailing shield and the return pole have a gradient in saturation magnetization such that the saturation magnetization varies in a down track direction.

A method and system provide a magnetic transducer having an air-bearing surface (ABS). The magnetic transducer includes a main pole and at least one coil for energizing the main pole. The main pole includes a pole tip region and a yoke region. The pole tip region includes sidewalls, a bottom and a top wider than the bottom. At least one of the sidewalls forms a first sidewall angle with a down track direction at the ABS and a second sidewall angle with the down track direction at a first distance recessed from the ABS. The first sidewall angle is greater than the second sidewall angle.

A magnetic transducer has air-bearing surface (ABS) and includes a main pole, at least one coil, a side shield and a side gap. The coil(s) energize the main pole. The first side gap is conformal with the main pole. The second side gap is conformal with the main pole. The first side gap is between the second side gap and the ABS. The second side gap is wider than the first side gap.

The main pole includes a yoke and a pole tip having an ABS-facing surface. The pole tip includes a sidewall having a radius of curvature and a chisel angle. The chisel angle is measured between a yoke direction perpendicular to the ABS and a tangent the sidewall. The chisel angle for the pole tip continuously increases in the yoke direction to a maximum a first distance from the ABS-facing surface in the yoke direction. The radius of curvature for the pole tip has a minimum radius of curvature a second distance from the ABS-facing surface in the yoke direction. The first distance is greater than the second distance.

A perpendicular magnetic recording writer for use in a data storage device, the recording transducer has a magnetic writer pole, a pole tip facing an air bearing surface (ABS). The pole tip has a pole face, leading side wall, a trailing side wall, a first side wall and a second side wall. A trailing side wall nonmagnetic gap layer on the trailing side wall, a first side wall nonmagnetic gap layer deposited on the first side wall, and a second side wall nonmagnetic gap layer deposited on the second side wall. A high magnetic moment seed layer is deposited on the trailing side wall nonmagnetic gap layer, the first side wall nonmagnetic gap layer, and the second side wall nonmagnetic gap layer. In other aspects of the invention shields are provided that have magnetic moments less than the magnetic moment of the seed layers.

A magnetic recording transducer for use in a data storage device is described. The transducer has a main writer pole and magnetic shields adjacent to the main writer pole. The magnetic shields include a first plated soft ferromagnetic layer, a second plated soft ferromagnetic layer, and an antiferromagnetic coupling (AFC) trilayer between the first plated soft ferromagnetic layer and the second plated soft ferromagnetic layer. The AFC trilayer includes a first AFC layer of sputtered ferromagnetic material; a second AFC layer of a nonmagnetic antiferromagnetic exchange material, and a third AFC layer of sputtered ferromagnetic material. Shields with AFC trilayers in leading, side, and/or trailing shields, as well as between shields are provided. A method of fabricating is also provided.

Magnetic recording transducer with sputtered antiferromagnetic coupling trilayer between plated ferromagnetic shields and method of fabrication

A magnetic transducer has an ABS, a pole, coil(s) and a trailing shield. The pole includes a trailing surface having first and second portions. The first portion adjoins the ABS and is oriented at a first bevel angle from perpendicular to the ABS. The first bevel angle is nonzero and acute. The second portion adjoins the first portion, is recessed from the ABS and oriented at a second bevel angle from perpendicular to the ABS. The second bevel angle is less than the first bevel angle and nonzero. The trailing shield has a pole-facing surface part of which adjoins the ABS and is oriented at the first bevel angle. A write gap is between the trailing shield and the pole. The write gap has a constant thickness for the first portion of the trailing surface and a thickness that increases with increasing distance from the ABS for the second portion.

A method and system for providing a magnetic recording head is described. The magnetic recording head has an air-bearing surface (ABS) configured to reside in proximity to a media during use. The magnetic recording head includes a main pole, at least one auxiliary pole, a nonmagnetic spacer, and at least one coil. The main pole includes a first main pole piece and a second main pole piece. The first main pole piece includes a pole tip occupying a portion of the ABS and a back edge distal from the ABS. The second main pole piece has a front surface. The auxiliary pole(s) have a front recessed from the ABS and are magnetically coupled with the main pole. The nonmagnetic spacer is between the back edge of the first main pole piece and the front surface of the second main pole piece. The coil(s) are for energizing the main pole.
