A CMS membrane module includes plurality of hollow fiber CMS membranes that are enclosed within an open cylindrical shell whose ends are embedded in tubesheets. The shell is concentrically disposed within an open cylindrical pressure vessel whose open ends are covered by and secured by end caps. The shell includes a feed fluid inlet formed therein between the tubesheets and a retentate outlet in between one of the tubesheets and an adjacent end cap. A retentate seal is formed between the shell and the pressure vessel at a position between the tubesheets. A permeate seal is formed between the pressure vessel and the tubesheet that is adjacent a permeate port of the module. A structure made up of the CMS membranes, shell, tubesheets, and seals is slidable within the pressure vessel and not fixed in place in relation to the pressure vessel and end caps.

A gas separation membrane module is formed from a woven fabric of weft membrane hollow fibers and warp yarns. The membrane module includes an active hollow fiber region spanning the inner edges of the two tubesheets. The membrane module also includes two tubesheets formed by encapsulating membrane fiber on one or both ends. The tubesheet on the end includes a first sub-region adjacent the active fiber and a second sub-region extending from first sub-region to the outer face of the tubesheet. The spacing of the warp threads is relatively denser in the first sub-region than in the active region or the second sub-region.

A container for storing compressed gas includes a plurality of aligned glass capillaries extending into a tubesheet. Each of the capillaries has an open end flush with a front face of the tubesheet. An end cap having a gas outlet connectable to a compressed gas valve or conduit is fitted to the tubesheet in gas-tight fashion to form a high pressure space defined by inner surfaces of the capillaries, the front face of the tubesheet, and inner surfaces of the end cap.

A composite hollow ceramic fiber includes a porous hollow core supporting a thin, dense sheath. The non-gas-tight core comprises a first ceramic material and an interconnecting network of pores. The gas-tight sheath comprises a second ceramic material. The fiber is made by extruding a core suspension of particles of the first ceramic material, a polymeric binder, and a solvent and a sheath suspension of particles of the second ceramic material, a polymeric binder and a solvent, respectively, from a spinnerette and coagulating the nascent hollow fiber to effect phase inversion of the polymeric binders. The resultant green fiber is sintered in a two step process. First, the binders are burned off. Second, the sheath is densified and the second ceramic material is sintered without fully sintering the first ceramic material. The first ceramic material of the core suspension has a median particle size greater than that of the second ceramic material of the sheath suspension.

The resultant green fiber is sintered in a two step process. First, the binder is burned off. Second, the sheath is densified and the second ceramic compound is sinter without fully sintering the first ceramic compound. The first ceramic compound has a melting point higher than that of the second ceramic compound.
