Systems and methods for the efficient agitation of tissue samples. A device may include a plurality of chambers that each receives samples therein. The plurality of chambers may be uniformly spaced with respect to a least one dimension, to form a one dimensional or two dimensional array. Each of the chambers may include an opening and an agitator device in fluid contact with the sample disposed within the chamber. The agitator devices may include a micromotor which provides rotational motion to a shaft and an impeller fixed to the shaft such that the impeller and the shaft rotate together upon provision of the rotational motion by the micromotor. The system may include an electrical energy source electrically coupled to the plurality of micromotors to rotate the impellers sufficient to agitate the sample as required for a particular activity (e.g., homogenization, lysis).

A flow-through device for capturing a biological material from a fluid specimen and lysing the fluid specimen. The flow through device may include a first chamber containing a portion of the fluid specimen and a solid phase material retained in the first chamber. The solid phase material may have an affinity for the biological material in the fluid specimen. The first chamber may include an inlet opening which allows flow of the fluid specimen into the first chamber. The first chamber may also include an outlet opening which allows flow of the fluid specimen out of the first chamber. The flow through device may include a second chamber fluidly connected to the first chamber. The second chamber may include a portion of the fluid specimen and an impeller. The impeller may in use impart rotational motion to the fluid specimen to mechanically lyse the fluid specimen.

Compositions and methods for capture and elution of biological materials via particulates

Lysing may include agitating a specimen in a chamber along with a medium that includes a particulate lysing material that has an affinity for a biological material. Lysing material may include beads or other material which may be coated that facilitates binding. The medium may include a fluid with a high salt or low pH level. Binding of biological materials to solid surfaces may be induced by particular media. The biological material may be eluted by lowering a concentration of salt or increasing a pH level. Lysing materials with two or more different affinities may be employed. Lysing materials may include particles of different sizes. Heating may be used. Lysing may be performed in a flow through apparatus. Surfaces of solid materials may be modified to capture bacteria with high cell wall lipid content.
