Methods, systems, and computer program products for detecting losses in electrical networks are provided herein. A computer-implemented method includes computing a consumption estimation for each consumer associated with a network; determining a difference between (i) the consumption estimation and (ii) actual consumption for each consumer; clustering the consumers into a cluster based on a consumption pattern associated with each consumer; determining a level of deviation of (i) the consumption pattern associated with each consumer from (ii) a consumption pattern representative of the cluster; clustering the consumers into two or more clusters based on a consumption pattern during a first interval of time and during a second interval of time; determining, for each consumer, a level of evolution from (i) a first cluster during the first interval to (ii) a second cluster during the second interval; and identifying consumers associated with a given loss within the network.

Detecting non-technical losses in electrical networks based on multi-layered statistical techniques from smart meter data

One embodiment provides a method including: prior to an initial period of operation of an appliance, storing in memory a first set of characteristics of the appliance; during an initial period of operation of the appliance, learning a second set of characteristics of the appliance; during subsequent operation of the appliance: detecting an adverse operating condition of the appliance; and based on the first set of characteristics, the second set of characteristics and the detected adverse operating condition, determining a corrective action to be taken with regard to the appliance, the corrective action comprising at least one of: switching off the appliance and warning a user of the detected adverse operating condition. Other aspects are described and claimed.

Managing electricity usage for an appliance

Methods and arrangements for managing electricity generation in a distributed electricity generation system. A plurality of data inputs are received comprising: a sensed state of a power grid; a sensed state of local energy storage; and a sensed demand of a local electricity load. The data inputs are combined, and, based on the combined data inputs, there is determined a destination of electricity that is generated in the distributed electricity generation system. The at least one destination is selected from the group consisting of: a local electricity load, the power grid, and the local energy storage. Other variants and embodiments are broadly contemplated herein.

Injecting electricity into a grid from distributed generation

Methods, systems, and computer program products for managing a picogrid with a computing device are provided herein. A method includes generating one or more power-related models based on (i) data pertaining to a given device battery, (ii) data pertaining to one or more context sources, and (iii) one or more items of power-related historical data; determining a charging schedule for the given device battery to provision power for a picogrid based on the one or more power-related models, wherein said picogrid comprises a set of one or more additional devices connected to (i) the given device and (ii) an energy storage component; and implementing the charging schedule on the given device.

Managing a picogrid with a computing device

Methods and arrangements for load-shifting time deferrable devices. An electrical load scheduling mechanism is provided, and this is placed in communication with an appliance. Electrical grid load conditions are assessed, and delivery of electrical power to the appliance is scheduled via the electrical load scheduling mechanism. The scheduling includes altering a predetermined delivery of electric power to the appliance based on the assessed electrical grid conditions.

Plug arrangements for alleviating peak loads

Methods and arrangements for calculating a power budget. Data are received, the data including data relating to a current state of an electrical grid at a power-drawing location which draws at least one variable electrical load, the at least one variable electrical load being subject to variable pricing. At least one prediction is determined, the at least one prediction pertaining to a future state of the electrical grid and a future electrical load to be drawn at the power-drawing location. A power budget is thereupon calculated, with respect to the power-drawing location, based on the data and the at least one prediction. Other variants and embodiments are broadly contemplated herein.

Methods, systems, and computer program products for distributed phase balancing are provided herein. A method of use in connection with a distribution network having a phase imbalance includes determining one or more power consumption parameters associated with a given entity of the distribution network; determining one or more power supply parameters associated with the given entity of the distribution network; and computing, based on said one or more power consumption parameters and said one or more power supply parameters, at least one of (i) a level of power consumption increase and/or decrease and (ii) a level of power supply increase and/or decrease associated with one or more devices of the given entity to remedy the phase imbalance within the distribution network.

Distributed phase balancing

Methods and arrangements for providing appliance power management. A connector arrangement is provided for interconnecting an appliance with a power supply. There is identified, with respect to the appliance connected to the power supply, at least one of: an appliance category, a current operating state of the appliance, and a current standby state of the appliance. In response to the identifying of the at least one of: an appliance category, an appliance operating state and an appliance standby state, there is detected at least one of: anomalous appliance behavior and deficient power quality. Also, a control action is undertaken relative to the detection of the at least one of: anomalous appliance behavior and deficient power quality. Other variants and embodiments are broadly contemplated herein.
