A visible light characteristic changing layer formed from photosensitive or heat-sensitive material is formed in a location which can be viewed from a part of a label surface of an optical disk. The optical disk is set on a turntable of an optical disk unit while the label surface of the optical disk is directed downward. The optical disk and an optical pickup are moved mutually along the plane of the optical disk. In synchronism with the relative movement, the power of a laser beam output from the optical pickup is modulated in accordance with image data, such as characters or graphic images to be printed, and the laser beam is emitted onto the visible light characteristic changing layer. As a result of the visible light characteristic changing layer being exposed to the laser beam, a visible-light reflectivity of the visible light characteristic changing layer is changed, thereby forming a image corresponding to the image data on the label surface.

A visible light characteristic changing layer is formed in a location which can be viewed from a part of a label surface of an optical medium. The optical medium is set on a turntable of an optical disk unit, which may be rotated at a constant angular velocity, while the power of a laser beam is modulated in accordance with image data. The optical pickup operates at a first power level when changing a visible light characteristic of the optical medium to form the visible information and the optical pickup operates at a lower power level when not changing a visible light characteristic of the optical medium. As a result, a visible-light reflectivity of the visible light characteristic changing layer is changed, thereby forming a image corresponding to the image data on the label surface. A tracking servo operation is turned off while the optical pickup forms the visible information.

A method is designed for recording information on an optical disk in the form of a sequence of pits along a track of the optical disk. The method is carried out by the steps of generating a main optical beam and a sub optical beam while modulating a power of the main optical beam and the sub optical beam according to a recording signal representative of the information, the main optical beam having a power sufficient to form the pit, the sub optical beam having a power insufficient to form the pit, irradiating the main optical beam along the track to form the sequence of pits, irradiating the sub optical beam onto a vicinity area which is not irradiated by the main optical beam but which is adjacent to an area irradiated by the main optical beam, detecting a first return signal level of the sub optical beam reflected back from the vicinity area at a timing when the pit is formed by the main optical beam, detecting a second return signal level of the sub optical beam reflected back from the vicinity area at another timing when the pit is not formed, and controlling the power of the main optical beam in a real time basis during the recording of information based on both of the first return signal level and the second return signal level of the sub optical beam.

An optical disc recording system for recording data on a writable type optical disc comprises a data signal forming circuit which causes, when program information is recorded program by program separately and with interruption and table-of-contents (TOC) information is recorded later, information at a part-of-the-way or intermediate position (intermediate information) among position information necessary for producing the TOC information to be recorded, during each interruption, at a position inside of a TOC area on an optical disc and causes this intermediate information to be read out when writing of program information is resumed for later utilization for generation of the TOC information thereby to shorten time required for generation of the TOC information.
