A transmission for an automobile including a main shaft driven by and concentric to a main drive shaft driven by an engine and a counter shaft arranged in parallel with the main shaft according to the invention comprises change gears mounted on the main shaft between two bearings journaling the main shaft in the order of higher and lower speed gears and an overdrive gear. Diameters of journals of the main shaft for these gears are stepwise enlarged in the order of the journals for the higher and lower speed gears. The overdrive gear is integrally formed on the main shaft on a side of an end of the journal for the lowest speed gear remote from the higher speed gear. The transmission is easy in assembling and manufacturing and rigid and compact in construction.

Transmission for an automobile

In a manual transmission having a gear which is axially slidable from its neutral position to its operating position, there is provided a gear operating mechanism which is constructed to positively prevent the undesirable 'gear disengagement phenomenon'. The mechanism comprises an operating lever pivotable about a first axis relative to the transmission case to move the gear between the neutral position and the operating position; a handling lever pivotable about a second axis relative to the transmission case, the second axis being parallel with the first axis; a link pivotally connecting the operating and handling levers through pivot pins so that the link is pivotable about a third axis relative to the operating lever or vice versa and the link is pivotable about a fourth axis relative to the handling lever or vice versa; and means for pivotally moving the handling lever about the second axis in response to the movement of a speed change shift lever of the transmission, wherein the operating lever, the handling lever and the link are so arranged and constructed that when they assume respective positions to cause the gear to assume the operating position, the second, third and fourth axes come into alignment with one and other.

Gear operating mechanism of an automotive manual transmission

In a manual transmission having a gear which is axially slidable from its neutral position to its operating position, there is provided a gear operating mechanism which is constructed to positively prevent the undesirable 'gear disengagement'. The mechanism comprises an operating lever pivotable about a first axis relative to the transmission case to move the gear between the neutral position and the operating position; a handling lever pivotable about a second axis relative to the transmission case, the second axis being parallel with the first axis; and means for providing a cam-connection between the operating and handling levers in such a manner that the pivotal movement of the handling lever about the second axis within a predetermied angular range induces through the operating lever the movement of the gear between the neutral and operating positions, wherein the parts are so arranged that when, with the gear assuming the operating position, a force is applied to the gear to urge the same in a direction from the operating position to the neutral position, at least a part of the force is received by the transmission case through the operating lever, the handling lever and the means.

A mounting structure for a lubricating oil channel of a bushing of an extension for a transmission of a vehicle comprises a resilient cylindrical expansion anchor formed on a mid-portion of the channel and a cylindrical cavity formed in an inner wall of the extension for receiving therein the cylindrical expansion anchor which has been resiliently deformed, thereby securing the lubricating oil channel to the inner wall of the extension in a single operation without requiring any fastening means such as set screws or rivets.

A control apparatus for a vehicle power transmission includes a reverse misselection preventing mechanism and a selection check mechanism. Both of the mechanisms are arranged in close vicinity to each other, and respectively include a member formed integrally with a shifter bracket which connects a manually operated control lever with a fork rod for selecting and shifting into or from different gear shift positions. This integrated apparatus allows a reduced number of required parts and assembling steps.

A vehicle power transmission includes an extension casing into which projects a sleeve yoke which is rotatably journaled by the extension casing and connected to an output shaft of the transmission. Oil leakage between the extension casing and the sleeve yoke is minimized by an integral unit which comprises a cylindrical dust cover containing a baffle plate and an oil seal. The baffle plate is located between the oil seal and a bearing bush of the sleeve yoke. The integral unit facilitates mounting of the baffle plate and maintains the desired location thereof with respect to the associated elements.

Apparatus for preventing oil leakage from a vehicle power transmission

A mechanism for preventing unintended selection of reverse gear in a manual transmission of a vehicle comprising a plug assembly having a cam mechanism mounted at the base end portion of the control lever of the transmission. The cam mechanism allows the control lever to move freely to a forward drive gear shift position but restricts its direct linear movement from the forward drive gear shift position to the reverse gear shift position.

Mechanism for preventing misselection of reverse gear

A shift interlock mechanism of a vehicle power transmission has a shift lever fixedly mounted on a control shaft. An interlock plate, which is formed with a slot, axially slidably engaging the shift lever, is further provided on its both sides with a pair of cylindrical members. The cylindrical members are coaxial with the control shaft and formed with slots which are contiguous with the slot of the interlock plate. As the shift lever is rotated to effect selective engagement of desired speed gears, the cylindrical members provide increased supporting area of the shift lever to withstand excessive bending moment applied thereto.

A vehicle transmission with an automatic clutch is disclosed in which for gear shifting the clutch is disengaged with the assistance of a vacuum of a source of vacuum, via a control valve having a solenoid actuated clutch release valve and a clutch servo. Disengagement of the clutch is carried out when a gear shift lever is manipulated with an engine accelerator released. Reengagement of the clutch when the vehicle is in motion commences as soon as the gear shift lever is released and/or the accelerator is depressed. A safeguard is provided so that reengagement of the clutch when the vehicle is at a standstill will not commence as long as the gear shift lever is touched.

Vehicle transmission with an automatic clutch

A vehicle transmission with an automatic clutch is disclosed in which for gear shifting the clutch is disengaged with the assistance of a vacuum from a source of vacuum, via a control valve having a solenoid actuated clutch release valve and a clutch servo. Disengagement of the clutch is carried out when a gear shift lever is manipulated with an engine accelerator released. The reengagement of the clutch commences as soon as the flow of current to the solenoid for the clutch release valve is cut. The clutch release valve then disconnects the clutch servo from the source of vacuum. The reduction of the vacuum in the clutch servo takes place in two stages. In the first stage, the vacuum is reduced very quickly by means of a solenoid actuated air-on (air bleed) valve for a predetermined time after the flow of current to the solenoid for the clutch release valve has been cut until the clutch begins to engage or is about to engage. Current is supplied to the solenoid for the air-on valve when current is supplied to the solenoid for the clutch release valve. A delay means is provided whereby, after the predetermined time after the flow of current to the solenoid for the clutch release valve has been cut, the flow of current to the solenoid for the air-on valve is cut.

A switch is incorporated in a shift knob mounted to a gear shift lever for limited movement and includes a stationary contact and three mutually insulated contact fingers cooperable with the stationary contact. The contact arrangement is such that manipulation of the shift knob upon selecting one of a first group of positions of the shift lever will cause one of first and second contact fingers to contact with the stationary contact and manipulation of the shift knob upon selecting one of a second group of the positions of the shift lever will cause third contact finger to contact with the stationary contact and thereafter will cause one of first and second contact fingers to contact with the stationary contact.

A spring-loaded cam plate is pivotally mounted on an outer inclined surface of a brake pawl having at its inner surface a tooth, the cam plate being pivotable relative to the brake pawl along the outer inclined surface. A driver operable control rod is formed with a cut out portion forming an wedge surface including a large inclined first section near the bottom of the cut out portion and a small inclined second section. The first and second sections are selectively engageable with a free end of the cam plate upon axial movement of the control rod to urge the brake pawl to disengage from or engage with the parking gear.

In a power transmission system, a bearing is provided for carrying an output shaft of the torque converter unit. The bearing is lubricated by torque converter fluid delivered thereto through a lubrication circuit. The lubrication circuit includes a flow restriction ring and a drain passage of a relatively large size whereby the life of a fluid seal arranged in the lubrication circuit is remarkably prolonged.

A solenoid for selectively actuating a valve. The solenoid has a housing removably connected in a fluid-tight manner to a housing of the valve. An actuating coil is housed within the solenoid housing with an actuating plunger coaxial therewith internally thereof. The plunger is actuated reciprocably to a projected position for opening the valve when the actuating coil is energized and restores to a restored position when the coil is deenergized. The plunger terminates in a push pin of lesser diameter and defines a shoulder therewith and an opposite end terminates in an axial shaft or axle shaft of lesser diameter which defines a second shoulder therewith. Flexible dampeners are mounted on both shoulders for dampening the plunger movement as it reaches two extreme positions corresponding to the projected and restored positions thereof. The dampeners engage portions of the solenoid housing to dampen the plunger arrival at its terminal or extreme positions.
