Systems and methods for supporting random access for wireless devices have different levels of random access pre-compensation and/or Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) capabilities are disclosed. In one embodiment, a method performed by a wireless device comprises obtaining two or more random access configurations for two or more wireless device classes that support different levels of pre-compensation for random access, have different GNSS capabilities, or both. The method further comprises selecting a random access configuration to be used by the wireless device from the two or more random access configurations. In this manner, random access is tailored to the capabilities of the wireless device.

Random access in network supporting UEs with different pre-compensation and/or GNSS capabilities

Systems and methods related to cell selection based on random access channel pre-compensation features supported by a wireless device are disclosed. In one embodiment, a method performed by a wireless device comprises obtaining information that indicates one or more random access channel pre-compensation features required for wireless devices to select a cell. The method further comprises making a decision as to whether the wireless device is permitted to select the cell based on the information and one or more random access channel pre-compensation features supported by the wireless device and performing one or more actions in accordance with the decision.

Embodiments include methods for a wireless device. Such methods can include receiving, from a network node in a wireless network, control signaling that indicates a parameter configuration for data transmissions, by the network node or by the wireless device, that are associated with a subset of a plurality of hybrid ARQ, HARQ, processes. The indicated parameter configuration can be one of a plurality of parameter configurations corresponding to a respective plurality of different subsets of the HARQ processes. According to some embodiments, a method performed by a network node for mobility management comprises obtaining data samples for modeling a wireless network environment that comprises a plurality of cells and building a machine learning model of the wireless network using the obtained data samples. The machine learning model is trained to determine a sequence of handovers for a wireless device among the plurality of cells for the wireless device to traverse from a source cell to a destination cell. The method further comprises receiving mobility information for a wireless device, determining one or more handover operations for the wireless device based on the mobility information, and transmitting the one or more handover operations to the wireless device.

Methods and apparatus for obtaining a frequency offset corresponding to a Doppler shift of transmission and/or reception frequencies between a wireless device and a network node. In one embodiment a method is performed by a wireless device for operating in a non-terrestrial network, NTN, the NTN having at least one network node and a communication satellite, wherein the at least one network node is one of a terrestrial base station and a satellite base station or satellite gateway, the method includes obtaining a frequency offset corresponding to a Doppler shift of transmission and/or reception frequencies between the wireless device and the network node and applying the frequency offset to an uplink transmission to the network node.

Frequency offset in non-terrestrial networks

A network node is configured to monitor battery usage on behalf of the low power device and to predict the SOC and remaining life-time for the batteries in the low power devices. The network nodes are fully powered and have the computational capacity to use more complex and accurate models that are not feasible for implementation in resource-limited devices. The network node can calculate the SOC and remaining life-time for a low power device and may also change the transmission and reception patterns for the device to extend the life-time of the battery.

Embodiments include methods for radio link monitoring (RLM) by a user equipment (UE) in a combined terrestrial and satellite wireless communication network. Such methods include, during a discontinuity in a connection between a UE and a terrestrial network node (TNN), performing RLM of the connection based on a second configuration. Such methods also include, before and/or after the discontinuity, performing RLM of the connection based on a first configuration. The connection includes a first link between the UE and a satellite and a second link between the satellite and the TNN. The discontinuity includes a link switch in at least one of the first link and the second link. The RLM before, during, and after the discontinuity can include various first, second, and third operations, respectively. Embodiments also include complementary methods performed by a TNN, as well as UEs and TNNs configured to perform operations corresponding to such methods.

Configuring radio link monitoring (RLM) for moving radio access network (RAN)

Embodiments include methods for operating a user equipment (UE) in a non-terrestrial network (NTN) that utilizes one or more polarization modes for serving one or more cells. Such methods include sending, to a network node, an indication of one or more polarization capabilities of the UE. Such methods also include transmitting and/or receiving one or more signals or channels in a first cell of the NTN according to the indicated polarization capabilities of the UE. In some embodiments, the indicated polarization capabilities of the UE include: a UE type; one or more polarization modes supported by the UE; a polarization correspondence between uplink and downlink signals that is supported by the UE; and/or a list of antenna panels supported by the UE and polarization modes supported by the antenna panels. Other embodiments include complementary methods for operating network nodes, and UEs and network nodes configured to perform such methods.

Methods for indicating polarization capabilities of user equipment in a non-terrestrial network (NTN)

According to some embodiments, a method performed by a wireless device comprises: determining geographical location information of the wireless device with respect to each cell of a plurality of cells; adjusting a cell reselection ranking for the plurality of cells based on the geographical location information for the plurality of cells; selecting a cell from the plurality of cells based on the adjusted ranking; and camping on the selected cell.

GNSS enhanced cell ranking

A method and apparatus for design and optimization of a network are described. A first deep neural network is used to obtain a function that represents a relationship between design parameters of the network and network performance metrics of the network. A second deep neural network is used to obtain a subset of one or more candidate network deployment configurations that optimize the performance metrics for the network. An optimal candidate network deployment configuration for the network is selected from the subset of candidate network deployment configurations wherein the optimal candidate network deployment configuration maximizes performance of the network as defined based on the performance metrics.

A network node of a wireless communication network provides information to a User Equipment (UE) that allows the UE to adapt it radio measurements with respect to the network, to account for 'link changes.' Link changes are service-link and/or feeder-link changes arising from motion by the satellite(s) included in the Radio Access Network (RAN) portion of the network. The UE uses the provided information to adapt its radio measurements in conjunction with the link changes. Among the several advantages of accounting for satellite link changes in the manner contemplated are any one or more of reduced signaling going between the UE and the network, reduced battery consumption at the UE, mitigation of the effects of the link changes on the radio measurements, avoidance of spurious measurements, and an effective “automation” of the timed changeover by the UE to new measurement configurations, coincident with the occurrence of link changes.

User equipment, network node and methods therein for handling a moving radio access network

Systems and methods are disclosed herein for frequency adjustment in a wireless network, particularly a Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN). Embodiments of a method performed by a User Equipment (UE) are disclosed. In one embodiment, a method performed by a UE for compensating for a Doppler shift in a wireless network comprises obtaining, from a network node, a characterization of Doppler variations in a particular cell. The method further comprises tuning a local frequency reference f, of the UE to a received downlink frequency for the particular cell and adjusting the local frequency reference f, over time according to the pre-calculated characterization of Doppler variations in the particular cell. In this manner, the communication between the UE and the network node in the presence of large and varying Doppler shifts is enabled. Embodiments related to compensating for timing drift are also disclosed.

Frequency adjustment for non-terrestrial networks

A wireless device is operable to communicate with a network node of a communications network via a non-terrestrial communication path that includes satellites and satellite gateways. The wireless device determines that communication between the wireless device and the network node will experience a communication interrupting transition during a transition period in which the non-terrestrial communication path between the wireless device and the network node will be interrupted. The wireless device adjusts a PHY layer procedure of the wireless device to mitigate switching problems with one of the of satellites during and/or after the interruption.
