Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on a computer storage medium, for monitoring slug flow in subterranean wells. In one aspect, a method includes at a time instant, transmitting an acoustic signal across a cross-section of a pipeline flowing multiphase fluid including gaseous fluid and liquid fluid, wherein a portion of the acoustic signal is carried through the cross-section of the pipeline by the multiphase fluid and determining, at the time instant, a first quantity of the gaseous fluid and a second quantity of the liquid fluid passing the cross-section of the pipeline based, in part, on an energy of the portion of the acoustic signal carried through the cross-section and at least a portion of a total energy of the transmitted acoustic signal.

Slug flow monitoring and gas measurement

A system for preventing hydrate formation in a pipeline includes a heater housing. The heater housing has an outer diameter sized to travel within the pipeline. A turbine assembly is located within the heater housing. The turbine assembly has a blade that is rotatable by a flow of fluid within the pipeline. An electric heater is located within the heater housing and is electrically connected to the turbine assembly. The electric heater is selectively contacted by the flow of fluid within the pipeline.

Self-powered pipeline hydrate prevention system

An ultrasonic transceiver array provides for measurement and determination of flow rate of oil, water and gas in a multiphase flow in a pipe or conduit. The transceiver array is mounted externally and non-invasively in an elliptical arrangement on the pipe surface, resulting in an ellipsoid section of the flow cross-sectional area to be interrogated. The single ultrasonic transceiver array forms a tomographic image of multiphase flow to determine volume fraction of each phase; measure the total flow velocity to determine flow rate of individual phases and thus provide a three phase measurement capability. Both phase fractions and flow velocities can be determined at the same time, eliminating the need for two different systems to achieve that purpose.

The bluff body attaches to an elastic mount and is capable of generate vortex shedding when the elastic mount orients the bluff body in a flow-line traverse to a fluid flow and vibrates in response to the vortex shedding. A harvester is located within the bluff body and is capable of generating power above a specified threshold in response to the vibration.

Systems, computer-implemented methods, and non-transitory computer-readable medium having a stored computer program provide characterization of multiphase fluid flow (MPF) using approximate entropy calculation techniques to enhance measuring and monitoring of a flow regime in a segment of pipe for hydrocarbon-production operations. The systems and methods can be optimized using principal component analysis.

Entropy based multiphase flow detection

Multiphase flow regimes in downhole or surface flow lines are made identifiable by forming images of the flow based on data obtained by flow regime metering of the flow. The flow regime metering data are gathered and processed in a format in which it can be subjected to face recognition processing of the type used for recognition of the faces of persons, and also to Bayesian classification techniques. Identification capabilities are particularly enhanced in flow regimes where gas bubbles or large amounts of free gas cause clutter and multiple reflections in the metering data.

Disclosed are systems, methods, and apparatuses to detect one or more downhole laterals in a wellbore using electromagnetic sensors. Certain embodiments include a subsurface unit including a ruggedized encapsulation resistant to heat, pressure, and variations in pH. The systems and apparatuses are communicable with surface controls.
