According to embodiments, a device includes a camera configured to read a symbol attached to a commodity and capture an image containing discount information attached to the commodity; a commodity information storage configured to store information regarding the commodity acquired by reading the symbol attached to the commodity; a first evaluator configured to determine whether prior commodity information stored in the commodity information storage includes information related to invisible information, in response to reading discount information attached to the commodity; a second evaluator configured to determine whether commodity identification information included in the discount information is identical to commodity identification information included in the information related to the invisible information, in response to the first evaluator determining that the prior commodity information stored in the commodity storage includes the information related to the invisible information; and an output generator configured to output information related to the discount information.

A sales data processing system includes a first reader that reads a code symbol as a visible image included in image information output by an imaging unit, a second reader that reads a code symbol as an invisible image in the image information, and a third reader that recognizes a service image in the image information. The system includes a registrar that registers information as sales data on a commodity identified by the code symbol read by the first or second reader, and a standby processor that suspends reading by the second reader and waits for recognition of a service image by the third reader in response to a commodity being identified by the code symbol read by the second reader. The system includes a service processor that reflects a service in the sales data registered by the registrar in response to the third reader recognizing the service image.

According to one embodiment, a commodity registration device includes an optical reading unit with a reading range. The optical reading unit is configured to acquire an image of a commodity in the reading range. A wireless tag reading unit is configured to read a commodity code from a wireless tag of the commodity in the reading range. A processor determines whether the commodity is in the reading range of the optical reading unit and causes a notification unit to indicate the commodity has been registered if the wireless tag reading unit successfully reads the commodity code from the wireless tag while the commodity is determined to be in the reading range of the optical reading unit.

A symbol reading device includes a plurality of reading units and a processor. The reading units read symbols on articles conveyed along a conveyance path. The processor is configured to acquire symbol information from a plurality of articles and store the symbol information in association with each of the reading units that read the symbols on respective articles, then identify a reading unit that can be substituted by another reading unit based on the symbol information associated with the reading units. The identified reading unit in then placed into a power saving state.
