A substrate for a magnetic read/write head is disclosed. The substrate can reduce detachment of crystal grains when the substrate is machined. The substrate may be machined when the substrate is cut into strips or a flow path surface recess is formed to produce the magnetic read/write head. The reduced detachment of crystal grains makes the magnetic read/write head more resilient to chipping, which allows the magnetic read/write head to have a lower and more stable flying height that increases recording density.

A ceramic sintered body contains AlOcrystal grains, internal TiC crystal grains existing in the AlOcrystal grains and external TiC crystal grains other than the internal TiC crystal grains. The AlOcrystal grains and the external TiC crystal grains retain stress caused by the difference in thermal expansion coefficient remaining after sintering, so that the AlOcrystal grains and the external TiC crystal grains pull each other in the interface therebetween. As a result, when the ceramic sintered body is machined, micro-cracks generated in the interface can easily grow due to the residual stress in addition to the shearing force caused by the machining operation, so that machinability is improved.

A thin film layer formed of a material having good wetting properties with respect to solder is laid on a joining surface of a second substrate, and at the same time, a thin film layer formed of Au is laid on a joining surface excluding concave grooves of a first substrate, and optical fibers are placed in the concave grooves of said first substrate, and then urged by the second substrate from the upper side thereof to cause the thin film layer on the first substrate to be plastically deformed and joined by a solder. The solder allows the optical fibers to be urged against the concave grooves of the first substrate, and at the same time, the thin film layer which is formed of Au and protruded to the concave groove side allows a change in the volume of the solder and a dislocation of the optical fibers to be prevented, and the optical fibers to be positioned fixedly at a high accuracy in the concave grooves.

Disclosed is colored, partially stabilized zirconia ceramics containing a colorant component and a stabilizer, wherein the zirconia ceramics contains 0.05 to 15% by weight of zirconium carbide based on the entire ceramics, the content of free carbon is lower than 0.1% by weight, and the crystal phase of the zirconia is composed of tetragonal crystals. This colored, partially stabilized zirconia ceramics is prepared by a process comprising molding a composition comprising 0.1 to 10 parts by weight of a colorant component and 90 to 99.9 parts by weight of zirconia and a stabilizer into a molded body having a predetermined shape, sintering the molded body, and sintering the obtained sintered body in a carbon atmosphere to form ceramics containing 0.05 to 15% by weight of zirconium carbide, in which the crystal phase of zirconia is composed of tetragonal crystals.
