A process for producing chlorine by oxidizing hydrogen chloride with oxygen. The process uses various supported ruthenium catalysts or a catalyst system containing (A) an active component of a catalyst and (B) a compound having thermal conductivity of a solid phase measured by at least one point within a range from 200 to 500&#xb0; C. of not less than 4 W/m. &#xb0; C.

A process for producing chlorine by oxidizing hydrogen chloride with oxygen, which comprises using at least one catalyst selected from the group consisting of a supported ruthenium chloride catalyst, a catalyst obtained by supporting at least one ruthenium compound, a ruthenium oxide catalyst obtained by oxidizing a catalyst which is prepared by supporting at least one ruthenium compound, and a catalyst obtained by calcining ruthenium chloride supported on a carrier at the temperature of not less than 280.degree. C.

The present invention provides a process for producing chlorine by oxidation of hydrogen chloride with oxygen which process comprises using a ruthenium catalyst.

According to a process for producing .alpha.-phenylethyl alcohol by hydrogenation of acetophenone, which uses a copper-based catalyst containing at least one alkaline earth metal carbonate and/or at least one alkali metal compound, the hydrogenolysis of starting acetophenone is inhibited, and hence the production of ethylbenzene as a by-product is reduced, so that it becomes possible to produce .alpha.-phenylethyl alcohol useful as a starting material for styrene with high selectivity.

C. in an inert gas atmosphere, as a catalyst.

An alkyl-substituted hydrocarbon is prepared effectively under mild conditions by alkylating an alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon having at least one hydrogen atom at an alpha-position in a side chain with an olefin in the presence of a solid base which is obtainable by treating a water-containing oxide of an alkaline earth metal with at least one material selected from the group consisting of alkali metals and alkali metal hydrides in an amount of 0.5 to 3.5 equivalents per one mole of water in said oxide in an inert gas atmosphere.
