A manufacturing method for a fuel cell includes the steps of: (a) preparing a stack and separators in a pair arranged in such a manner as to hold the stack therebetween; (b) forming a separator-bonded stack by bonding the separators in a pair and a sealing part to each other; and (c) warping a membrane electrode assembly with the bonded sealing part in a gap by reducing the temperature of the separator-bonded stack to cause thermal shrinkage of the separators in a pair, thereby moving the sealing part with the bonded separators in a pair inward.

The present invention is to provide a catalyst for fuel cells, which is able to inhibit gas diffusion resistance and shows high IV characteristics far more than conventional fuel cell catalysts, and a method for producing the catalyst. Disclosed is a catalyst for fuel cells, comprising fine catalyst particles, each of which comprises a palladium-containing particle and an outermost layer containing platinum and covering the palladium-containing particle, and a carrier on which the fine catalyst particles are supported, wherein the catalyst for fuel cells satisfies 0.9&#xd7;S1&#x2264;S2 in which S1 is a BET specific surface area of a material for the carrier, and S2 is a BET specific surface area of the carrier in the catalyst for fuel cells.

Catalyst for fuel cells and method for producing the same

An object of the present invention is to provide a production method which can increase the activity of a catalyst particle comprising a core particle and an outermost layer, the core particle comprising at least one of palladium and a palladium alloy, and the outermost layer comprising at least one of platinum and a platinum alloy and covering the core particle. The method is for producing a catalyst for fuel cells, in which a catalyst particle is supported by an electroconductive carrier, the method comprising the steps of: preparing a supported catalyst in which a catalyst particle comprising a core particle and an outermost layer is supported by an electroconductive carrier, the core particle comprising at least one of palladium and a palladium alloy, and the outermost layer comprising at least one of platinum and a platinum alloy and covering the core particle; acid treatment to bring the supported catalyst into contact with an acid solution which dissolves palladium more preferentially than platinum; and firing the supported catalyst at 80&#xb0; C. or more and less than 200&#xb0; C. in a reducing gas atmosphere after the acid treatment step.

Method for producing a catalyst for fuel cells

A fuel cell is disclosed comprising: a power generation layer including an electrolyte membrane, and an anode and a cathode provided on respective surfaces of the electrolyte membrane; a fuel gas flow path layer located on a side of the anode of the power generation layer to supply a fuel gas to the anode while flowing the fuel gas along a flow direction of the fuel gas approximately orthogonal to a stacking direction in which respective layers of the fuel cell are stacked; and an oxidizing gas flow path layer located on a side of the cathode of the power generation layer to supply an oxidizing gas to the cathode while flowing the oxidizing gas along a flow direction of the oxidizing gas opposed to the flow direction of the fuel gas. A power generation area of the fuel cell, in which electric power is generated, has an upstream region including a most upstream position along the flow direction of the fuel gas and a downstream region including a most downstream position along the flow direction of the fuel gas. A midstream region, which is a remaining region of the power generation area other than the upstream region and the downstream region, has higher water vapor transfer resistance between the anode side and the cathode side than the upstream region and the downstream region.

The present invention provides a fuel cell capable of inhibiting desiccation and flooding of a membrane electrode assembly. The fuel cell has a laminated body having a membrane electrode assembly including an electrolyte membrane sandwiched by an anode catalyst layer and a cathode catalyst layer. A pair of separators sandwiches the laminated body, and between at least one separator and the laminated body, inlet and outlet passages are formed. The inlet passage is blocked at a downstream end of the reaction gas supplied to the laminated body and the outlet passage is blocked at an upstream end of the reaction gas having passed through the laminated body. The inlet passage and the outlet passage are arranged separately from each other. The depth of the upstream region of the inlet passage is larger than that of the downstream region of the inlet passage.

The present invention provides a fuel cell having obstructed passages, which is capable of inhibiting the occurrence of flooding. The fuel cell comprises: a stacked body comprising at least a membrane electrode assembly; and a pair of separators sandwiching the stacked body. A face of the stacked body side of the separator is provided with inlet passage(s) through which reaction gas to be supplied to the stacked body passes and outlet passage(s) through which reaction gas having passed the stacked body passes. The inlet passage is obstructed at a downstream end of the reaction gas to be supplied to the stacked body and the outlet passage is obstructed at an upstream end of the reaction gas having passed through the stacked body. The inlet passage and the outlet passage is arranged separately from each other, and the inlet passage is arranged on both ends of the face of the stacked body side of the separator in the passage width direction of the inlet passage and the outlet passage.

A production method for a fuel cell including an electrolyte, an anode which is provided on one of both sides of the electrolyte, a cathode which is provided on the other side of the electrolyte, and separators one of which is provided on an outer side of the anode and the other of which is provided on an outer side of the cathode. This production method includes a first process in which the anode and the cathode each of which includes at least a catalyst and an ion-exchange resin are produced; and a second process in which the electrolyte is provided between the anode and the cathode before being formed into a thin-film electrolyte. With this production method, contact resistance can be reduced without increasing the number of production processes.

A Polymer Electrolyte Membrane is formed by hot air drying of a membrane formed with an acidic main-polymer having proton conductivity and capability of forming an electrolyte membrane (S), and then immersing it into a basic polymer solution to impregnate the membrane with the basic polymer (S). The basic polymer is introduced in a large quantity into a site acting as a proton conduction pass of the main-polymer to take charge of the proton conduction. Since in the Polymer Electrolyte Membrane, a base polymer takes charge of proton conduction as compared with the case where proton takes charge of the proton conduction as a hydrate, the base polymer shows favorable proton conductivity even in a low humidity state at an elevated temperature exceeding boiling point of water.

Polymer electrolyte membrane and method of production thereof

The present invention is a grafted polymer electrolyte membrane prepared by first preparing a precursor membrane comprising a polymer which is capable of being graft polymerized, exposing the surface of the precursor membrane to a plasma in an oxidative atmosphere, then graft-polymerizing a side chain polymer to the plasma treated precursor membrane and introducing a proton conductive functional group to the side chain. The resulting grafted polymer electrolyte membrane has excellent stability and performance when used in a proton-exchange membrane fuel cell or for electrolysis of water.

Composite resin material and method of forming the same

A cross-linked polyurethane resin powder includes a powder including particles made from a hard or a semi-hard polyurethane resin. The particles have a superficial portion and an internal portion disposed inside the superficial portion, and involve cross-linked bondings therein. Part of the cross-linked bondings are unchanged, and another part thereof are broken to result in activated groups. At least part of the activated groups are exposed on the superficial portion of the particles. The cross-linked polyurethane resin powder is produced by hydrolyzing a hard or semi-hard polyurethane resin in the presence of water and in a temperature range of from a hydrolysis temperature of the resin to a liquefying temperature thereof, and by applying a predetermined shearing force to the resin. The cross-linked polyurethane resin powder can disperse well in resinous substrates, and can upgrade the physical properties of the resulting recycled products.
