Provided are titanium oxide fine particles which are excellent in transparency and are less photocatalytically active while maintaining a high refractive index, a dispersion of such fine particles, and a method for producing such a dispersion. The method for producing a dispersion of iron-containing rutile titanium oxide fine particles including a step (1) of neutralizing an aqueous metal mineral acid salt solution containing Ti and Fe in FeO/(TiO+FeO)=0.001 to 0.010 to form an iron-containing hydrous titanic acid; a step (2) of adding an aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution to form an aqueous solution of iron-containing peroxotitanic acid having an average particle size of 15 to 50 nm; a step (3) of adding a tin compound so as to satisfy TiO/SnO=6 to 16; a step (4) of adding a sol of silica-based fine particles which contain Si and a metal element M in SiO/MO=99.9/0.1 to 80/20, the addition being made so as to satisfy SiO/(oxides of the other elements)=0.08 to 0.22; and a step (5) of hydrothermally treating the solution obtained in the step (4).

Disclosed are porous silica-based particles having high surface smoothness, a method for producing the porous silica-based particles, and a cosmetic comprising the porous silica-based particles. The porous silica-based particles have an average particle diameter of 0.5 to 30 &#x3bc;m and have a surface smoothness of a level to such an extent that, when the entire surface of the particle is observed from a photograph thereof taken by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with a magnifying power of 10,000, a foreign matter attached to the surface thereof can be hardly seen.

A multi-functional composite poser having the properties of (a) excellent adhesiveness, (b) excellent extendability, (c) an appropriate glossy effect, (d) appropriate covering capability, and (e) excellent soft-focusing capability. The powder is constituted by a scale-like base material, a group of particles including titanium dioxide particles deposited on a part of a surface of the scale-like base material, and a thin film of a composite oxide containing titanium and iron coating part of the surface of the scale-like base material.

Multi-functional composite powder

This invention provides cosmetics containing a multi-functional composite powder having the properties of (a) an excellent adhesiveness, (b) an excellent extendability, (c) an appropriate glossy effect, (d) a homogeneous cosmetic film, (e) an appropriate covering capability, (f) a cosmetic film not causing a white masking, (g) a high compatibility between a color appearance of cosmetics and a color tone of the cosmetic film, (h) an excellent soft-focusing capability, (i) an excellent ultraviolet protective effect, and the like. The multi-functional composite powder is constituted by a scale-like base material, a group of particles comprising at least fine particles of titanium dioxide deposited on a surface of the scale-like base material, and a thin film of a composite oxide containing titanium and iron coated thereon.

Spherical composite particles are formed of inorganic fine particles and resin fine particles joined together, and an average particle diameter is in the range from 1.1 to 100 &#x3bc;m, in which the average particle diameter of the inorganic fine particles is in the range from 5 to 600 nm and the average particle diameter of the resin fine particles is in the range from 10 to 500 nm. The inorganic fine particle and the resin fine particle have almost the same size, and the hardness, softness, and adaptability when spreading on a skin can finely be adjusted as desired in a wide range according to the contact feeling required for the cosmetics in which the particles are blended.

The resin-coated scale-like inorganic particles have soft feel, adhesivity to human skin and effective in suppressing excessive luster. The scale-like inorganic particles are those with the surface coated with resin, and are characterized in that the 100% modulus of the resin in the tensile test is in a rage from 50 to 3000 N/cm . The resin is preferably one or more selected from the group consisting of polyurethane, a styrene-butadiene copolymer, an acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer, a silicone-based elastomer, and a polyolefin-based elastomer. The resin-coated scale-like inorganic particles are blended in the cosmetics according to the present invention.

A composite powder prepared by coating a ramentaceous substrate with at least two color layers. A difference between the maximum value and the minimum value of the ab hue angle h (h &minus;h ) as defined in the recommendation on uniform color space by CIE is in the range from 10&deg; to 180&deg;. A ratio of the maximum value vs the minimum value of the brightness L* as defined in the recommendation is in the range from 1.0 to 2.0. According to the viewing angle, the color tone of the composite powder changes.

An inorganic composite powder is formed of a scaled substrate, and at least three inorganic oxide layers having different refractive indexes respectively and sequentially laminated in an order of high refractive index to low refractive index from a surface of the scaled substrate to an utmost outer layer. A refractive index of an inorganic oxide used for forming the utmost outer layer is 1.73 or less, and a difference in the refractive indexes between the utmost layer and a layer adjacent thereto is 0.6 or less. Alternatively, the thickness of at least one of a second or higher inorganic oxide layer is within &plusmn;20% of a value d given by an equation: d&equals;(&lgr;&times;X/4)/n, wherein &lgr; indicates a wavelength of visual light, X indicates an odd integer, and n indicates the refractive index of the inorganic oxide.

Inorganic composite powder and cosmetic comprising the same

White or colored pigments which do not suffer from color tone or hiding performances thereof even when the surface is moistened with water or oil, without spoiling coloring performance or hiding performance of the pigments themselves. These pigments are surface-coated with an inorganic compound having the refractive index of 1.8 or below. The inorganic compound is preferably silicon oxide, and the pigments are preferably inorganic pigments comprising titanium oxide, zinc oxide, or iron oxide. The cosmetics of the invention are blended the pigments therein.
