A resin coating is formed on a metal surface using an aqueous autodepositing resin composition that contains oxidizing agent, acid, and carboxyl-functional and/or hydroxyl-functional water-dispersible or water-soluble resin and, optionally, metal ions; the resulting coating, while still in its uncured condition, is subject to post-treatment with an aqueous solution containing from 0.5 to 5.0 g/L of amine and from 10 to 100 g/L (solids) of water-soluble amino resin molecules that bear at least two alkoxymethylamino, methylolamino, and/or imino groups; and the coating is then dried and cured. This provides a highly anticorrosive coating on the metal, and contrary to an analogous process in which the post-treatment solution contains amino resin but not amine, the post-treatment solution remains stable and provides continuing high quality coating performance even after a considerable amount of metal surface per unit volume of post-treatment solution has been processed.

An effective electrically insulating film on the surface of a metal object, such as a common type of electric motor core assembly, in which the surface includes an interior comer on which insulation is desired, can be formed by autodeposition with an adequate thickness in the interior corner without need for excessive thickness on other parts of the surface that are more readily covered by prior art methods of applying an insulating coating. Zinciferous surfaces, particularly those of galvanized steel, may be effectively protected against corrosion, either as treated or after painting, while remaining easy to weld, by contact with an aqueous solution containing chromium in both +6 and +3 valence states, phosphate, a tertiary alcohol or similar oxidation stable, water soluble organic compound as a wetting agent, and a silane coupling agent, followed by drying with a film from the solution still in place on the surface. A thin coating containing 10-200 mg/m.sup.2 of chromium is formed on the surface to provide a protective layer that is also an excellent base for paint.
