A toner image formed on an image bearing member is transferred onto a recording material so as to overflow from an edge portion of the recording material, thereby enabling the toner image to be formed so as to extend to the edge portion of the recording material. To suppress the deposition of the toner in the edge portion of the recording material, a cleaning member for cleaning the edge portion of the recording material obtained after the fixing is provided. In order to make a trailing edge of the recording material come into contact with the cleaning member, the recording material which has passed through a fixing apparatus is temporarily switched back, thereby allowing the trailing edge portion of the recording material to collide with the cleaning member.

Unit for cleaning edge portion of recording material or image forming apparatus

A compact image forming apparatus is provided in which stains on the back of a transfer material can be prevented. In particular, in a marginless print mode in which a toner image can be formed to the edge of a transfer material, a large amount of toner adheres to a transfer-material bearing member. The image forming apparatus includes a collecting member that can temporarily collect the toner adhering to the transfer-material bearing member. The toner that is temporarily collected by the collecting member is transferred to an intermediate transfer member and is cleaned by a cleaning unit.

A cleaning device for removing residual toner on a surface of an electrophotographic photosensitive member includes a cleaning blade for scraping residual toner off the surface of the photosensitive member, and a toner supply portion, disposed in an upper stream side of the cleaning blade as viewed in a moving direction of the surface of the photosensitive member, for causing toner to stick to the surface of the photosensitive member, the toner supply portion being switchable between a first mode of causing toner to stick to the surface of the photosensitive member to supply toner to the nip between the surface of the photosensitive member and the cleaning blade and a second mode of not causing toner to stick to the surface of the photosensitive member or of decreasing an amount of toner to be stuck to the surface of the photosensitive member, the second mode being selectable when a main switch of an image forming apparatus having the cleaning device mounted therein has become turned on.

The present invention provides an image forming apparatus which has an image bearing member developing device for developing an electrostatic latent image formed on the image bearing member with developer, cleaning device for removing residual developer on the image bearing member by contacting with the image bearing member at a cleaning position, charging applying device for applying charge of polarity opposite to normal charging polarity of the developer to the developer before the developer applied to the image bearing member is carried to the cleaning position, wherein a developer image formed on the image bearing member by the developing device is transferred onto a transfer material and wherein the developing device applies developer to an area of the image bearing member which is not contacted with the transfer material, and the developer is carried to the cleaning position by the image bearing member.
