A novel polycyclic aromatic compound in which plural aromatic rings are linked via boron atoms, oxygen atoms and the like is provided, and therefore, the range of selection of the material for organic electroluminescent elements can be widened. Also, an excellent organic electroluminescent element is provided by using the novel polycyclic aromatic compound as a material for an organic electroluminescent element.

An organic electroluminescent device having a light-emitting layer, wherein the light-emitting layer contains a host compound having a boron atom and an oxygen atom in the molecule as a first component, a thermally assisting delayed fluorescent material such that the energy difference ΔEST between the excited singlet energy level and the excited triplet energy level is 0.20 eV or less as a second component, and a fluorescent material as a third component, and has a high light emission efficiency.

An organic light-emitting device containing both a compound represented by the following general formula (1) and a compound represented by the following general formula (2) has a high light emission efficiency. The objective of the invention is to provide a polycyclic aromatic compound in which solubility to a solvent, film formability, wet coatability, thermal stability, and in-plane orientation are improved. This objective is achieved by alight emission layer-forming composition comprising: as a first component, at least one type of dopant material selected from the group consisting of polycyclic aromatic compounds represented by general formula (A) and polycyclic aromatic oligomer compounds including a plurality of structures represented by general formula (A); as a second component, a specific low-molecular-weight host material; and, as a third component, at least one type of organic solvent. In formula (A), ring A, ring B, and ring C each independently represent an aryl ring or a hetero aryl ring, Yis B, and Xand Xeach independently represent O or N&#x2014;R wherein at least one of Xand Xis N&#x2014;R.

Polycyclic aromatic compound and light emission layer-forming composition

A polycyclic aromatic compound represented by general formula (1) described below and having a bulky substituent in a molecule is used as a material for an organic device, whereby, for example, an organic EL device excellent in quantum efficiency can be provided. In particular, concentration quenching can be suppressed even if a use concentration is comparatively high, and therefore the present art is advantageous in a device production process. In formula (1) described above, R, R, Rto R, Rto Rand Rto Rare independently hydrogen, aryl or the like, Xis &#x2014;O&#x2014; or &#x3e;N&#x2014;R (R is aryl or the like), Zand Zare a bulky substituent such as aryl, and at least one hydrogen in the compound represented by formula (1) may be replaced by halogen or deuterium.

Material for organic device and organic electroluminescent device using the same

With a light-emission-layer material comprising: a novel polycyclic aromatic compound (1) or a multimer thereof in which a plurality of aromatic rings are linked by a boron atom and a nitrogen atom; and a specific anthracene-based compound (3) that achieves optimum light-emission characteristics in combination with said polycyclic aromatic compound or a multimer thereof, it is possible to provide an organic EL element having optimum light-emission characteristics. Ring A to ring C are an aryl ring or the like, Yrepresents B, Xand Xrepresent N&#x2014;R, R of the N&#x2014;R is an aryl or the like, and Arand Arare a hydrogen atom, a phenyl, a group represented by formula (4), or the like.

Organic electroluminescent element

To provide an organic electroluminescent device in which energy efficiency is improved. An organic electroluminescent device includes a pair of electrode layers formed of an anode layer and a cathode layer, and a luminescent layer arranged between the pair of electrode layers, in which the luminescent layer includes a host material and a dopant material, and the dopant material is an anthracene-based compound represented by formula (1), and the luminescent layer further includes a polycyclic aromatic compound represented by formula (2) or a multimer of a polycyclic aromatic compound having a plurality of structures represented by formula (2).

Organic electroluminescent device

By providing a novel polycyclic aromatic compound in which a plurality of aromatic rings are linked via a boron atom, a nitrogen atom, or the like, options of a material for an organic EL element are increased. In addition, by using the novel polycyclic aromatic compound as a material for an organic electroluminescent element, an excellent organic EL element is provided.

The present invention relates to a light emitting layer material comprising: a polycyclic aromatic compound (1) in which a plurality of aromatic rings are linked by a boron atom and a oxygen atom or a nitrogen atom; and a specific anthracene-based compound (3) that achieves optimum light-emission characteristics in combination with said polycyclic aromatic compound. With this light emitting layer material having optimum light emitting characteristics, it is possible to provide an excellent organic EL element.  Ring A to ring C are an aryl ring or the like, Yis B (boron), Xand Xare &#x2014;O&#x2014; or &#x3e;N&#x2014;R (provided that at least one is &#x2014;O&#x2014;), X is a group represented by formula (3-X1), (3-X2), or (3-X3), Y is &#x2014;O&#x2014;, &#x2014;S&#x2014; or &#x3e;N&#x2014;R, Ris a hydrogen atom or an optionally substituted aryl, Arto Arare phenyl, a group represented by formula (4), or the like, and both Arand Ardo not simultaneously represent a phenyl.

Provided is an organic electroluminescent element including a light emitting layer containing, as a dopant, at least two compounds selected from a compound group consisting of a polycyclic aromatic compound represented by the following general formula (1) and a multimer thereof: wherein the symbols are defined in the specification.

The present invention addresses the problem of providing a polycyclic aromatic compound which has improved solubility in solvents, film formability, wet coatability and in-plane orientation. The above-described problem is solved by a composition for forming a light emitting layer, which contains, as a first component, at least one compound selected from the group consisting of compounds represented by general formula (A-1) and compounds represented by general formula (A-2), as a second component, at least one compound that has a triplet energy (E) of 1.8-3.0 eV, and as a third component, at least one organic solvent.  In the formulae, R represents a hydrogen atom, an aryl group, a heteroaryl group, a diarylamino group, a diheteroarylamino group or an aryl heteroarylamino group.

Polycyclic aromatic compound and light emitting layer-forming composition

By using a polycyclic aromatic compound as a material for a light-emitting layer, formed by connecting a plurality of aromatic rings with a boron atom and an oxygen, sulfur, or selenium atom, which have been substituted by a specific aryl such as anthracene, an organic EL element having at least one of excellent quantum efficiency and element life can be provided.
