This invention relates to a transmissive liquid crystal display including a light source (BL), a reflective linearly-polarizing layer (Pr), a birefringent layer (A) having specific optical properties and specific retardation properties, a light source-side absorptive linearly-polarizing layer (P), a liquid crystal cell (LC), and a viewer-side linearly-polarizing layer (P) which are arranged in this order. In the transmissive liquid crystal display of the invention, light leakage is suppressed in oblique directions so that black brightness can be reduced. A reduction in contrast in the normal direction can also be suppressed, which is caused by the distribution of light to the normal direction.

A method of easily manufacturing a light diffusion film by a continuous process, which achieves both good display properties and an increase in viewing angle when used in a liquid crystal display. A method of manufacturing a light diffusion film includes forming a laminate of an original light diffusion film and a photosensitive resin, wherein the photosensitive resin includes at least two types of materials that are different in refractive index from each other; and irradiating the laminate with a collimated laser beam from a side of the original light diffusion film, wherein a reflection hologram formation-preventing layer is located on a side of the laminate opposite from the side of irradiation of the laminate with a collimated laser beam. In the process of irradiating the laminate, the reflection hologram formation-preventing layer prevents formation of a reflection hologram on the photosensitive resin due to a reflected light from the irradiation.

It is an object of the invention to provide a method for producing a combined optical film that includes opposing the end faces of a plurality of optical films to one another and can narrow the gap between the opposed end faces. A method for producing a combined optical film comprising a plurality of optical films each having at least one end face at which the optical films are opposed to one another, comprising the steps of: (1) opposing the end faces of the optical films to one another with a gap provided therebetween; (2) bonding a first seal material to the opposed portions of the optical films on a first side of each optical film to join the optical films; (3) bending the joined opposed portions of the optical films such that the joined opposed portions become concave on a second side of each optical film where the first seal material is not bonded and such that the gap is narrowed on the second side; (4) bonding a second seal material to the opposed portions on the second side, while the joined optical films are bent such that the gap is narrowed on the second side; and (5) cancelling the bending of the joined optical films to make them flat.

A directional diffusion film with diffusion properties that vary depending on the incidence angle is characterized in that a diffusion axis direction is in the range of 20&#xb0; to 50&#xb0; with respect to a normal direction of the film, and a diffusion half-value angle is at least 20&#xb0; and lower than 90&#xb0;. The diffusion axis direction is a light irradiation direction in which the strongest diffusion light is obtained when the film is irradiated with light.
