A liquid crystal composition which is a liquid crystal mixture of an achiral liquid crystal compound of the following formula (IV) with a chiral compound having an adsorptivity to adsorbents, not greater than that of the achiral compound: ##STR1## wherein six-membered rings A', B', C' and D' each independently are trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, 1-cyclohexene-1,4-diyl or 1,4-phenylene; g, h and i each are 0 or 1; (g+h+i).gtoreq.1; X', Y' and Z' each independently are a single bond, --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --, --CH.dbd.CH-- or --C.tbd.C--; R.sup.7 is C.sub.n H.sub.2n+1 --, C.sub.n H.sub.2n-1 or C.sub.n H.sub.2n+1 OC.sub.k H.sub.2k --; R.sup.8 is C.sub.m H.sub.2m+1 --, C.sub.m H.sub.2m+1 O--, F, CHF.sub.2 O or CF.sub.3 O--; n and m each independently are an integer of 1 to 18; k is an integer of 1 to 17; (n+k) is 2 to 18; at least one of X', Y' and Z' is single bond; when ring D' is 1,4-phenylene and R.sup.8 is F, CHF.sub.2 O-- or CF.sub.3 O--, then H at ortho position as regards R.sup.8 may be replaced by F; and when g is 1 and ring B' or C' is 1,4-phenylene, then H at the lateral position of the ring may be replaced by F.

Liquid crystal composition

A liquid crystal composition comprising (1) at least one compound selected from those expressed by the formula (I) and (2) at least one compound selected from those expressed by the formulas (II), (III), (IV) and (V): ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 to R.sub.5 are C.sub.1-10 alkyl; R.sub.6 and R.sub.7 are C.sub.1-10 alkyl or alkenyl; X is H or F; X.sub.1 and X.sub.2 are F, --CF.sub.3, --OCF.sub.3, --CHF.sub.2 or --OCHF.sub.2 ; Y.sub.1 and Y.sub.2 are H or F; Z.sub.1, Z.sub.2 and Z.sub.4 are --COO--, --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 -- or a single bond; Z.sub.3, Z.sub.5 and Z.sub.6 are --COO--, --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, --C.tbd.C-- or a single bond; and A is ##STR2## which composition is provided with characteristics of high specific resistance, low viscosity while keeping small current consumption, a suitable clearing point and threshold voltage.

Liquid crystal composition and a liquid crystal display element using

Liquid crystal compositions comprising: at least one of the compounds of the general formula (I) and at least one of the compounds of the general formula (II); and optionally including at least one of the compounds of the general formula (III), or, when compound (III) is present, optionally including at least one of the compounds of the general formula (IV) are provided. ##STR1## All the symbols are as defined in the appended claims, namely, R.sup.1 is an alkyl group having 1 to 5 carbon atoms; R.sup.2 is an alkyl group having 2 to 8 carbon atoms; R.sup.3 is an alkyl group having 1 to 5 carbon atoms; R.sup.4 is an alkyl group having 2 to 8 carbon atoms; R.sup.5 is H or F; R.sup.6 is an alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, an alkoxyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, F, or a CN group; and R.sup.7 is an alkyl group having 2 to 10 carbon atoms or an alkenyl group having 2 to 10 carbon atoms. The compositions are suitable for use in highly multiplexed displays of the supertwisted birefringence effect mode.

Liquid crystal composition and liquid crystal display using said

Liquid crystal compositions and display devices using the compositions are disclosed. The compositions contain, as main components, at least one compound of the general formula (I), and at least one compound of the general formula (II), or, as well as the above components, at least one compound selected from the compounds of the general formulas (III), (IV) and (V), and/or at least one compound of the general formula (VI). ##STR1## (wherein all the symbols are as defined in the appended claims).
