An outboard motor incorporates an engine. An exhaust conduit is disposed below the engine. The exhaust conduit forms a first exhaust passage to discharge exhaust gases from the engine. A plastic lubricant pan (e.g., oil pan) is disposed below the engine to accumulate lubricant that lubricates a portion of the engine. The lubricant pan at least in part surrounds the exhaust conduit. In some embodiments, a protective member is provided to protect the lubricant pan from flames that descend from the engine toward the exhaust conduit or heat of the exhaust gases. In other embodiments, a protective member includes an exhaust conduit that generally shields the lubricant pan such that the lubricant pan is not exposed to the flames or the exhaust gases.

An improved, low horsepower, compact, high driving power, outboard motor having a reducing transmission located in the upper portion of the driveshaft housing and lower unit so as to provide a larger reduction ratio while maintaining a small lower unit to reduce drag.

Marine drive transmission

An outboard motor incorporating a unitary mounting assembly for resiliently connecting the steering shaft to the driveshaft housing. The mounting assembly also closes an upper portion of the driveshaft housing and has an opening that passes a water tube for supplying cooling water to the engine of the outboard motor.

Outboard motor

An engine control mechanism cooperates with both a manual choke operator and a manual throttle operator. The manual throttle operator actuates a throttle control mechanism and a timing advance mechanism. A lost motion connection interconnects the manual throttle operator and the throttle control mechanism. The manual choke operator actuates a choke control mechanism to close the choke valves associated with the engine charge formers. The manual choke also operates the timing advance mechanism and the throttle control mechanism to advance the spark timing and to slightly open the throttle valves beyond an idle position when the choke valves are closed. Operation of the throttle control mechanism via the manual choke operator, however, does not affect the manual throttle operator due to the lost motion connection between the throttle operator and the throttle control mechanism.

Control mechanism for engine throttle and choke valves

Two embodiments of carrying handles that can be permanently connected to an outboard motor for carrying the outboard motor when not in use. In each embodiment the carrying handle is connected so that it extends in a generally vertical direction in normal condition of the outboard motor and which can be grasped by a user for carrying of the outboard motor at the user's side, with the user's wrist in a normal condition. The carrying handle is associated with a latching bracket that latches the lower end of the handle to the clamping bracket for the carrying operation.

An ignition system spark timing controller having circuits for advancing the time at which the ignition system will produce a sparking potential during the starting of the engine, and for maintaining this advanced spark time for a predetermined time period after the engine has started when the temperature of the engine is below a predetermined temperature level during the starting of the engine. The spark timing controller also includes a circuit for advancing the time at which the ignition system will produce a sparking potential when the speed of the engine is below a predetermined speed level after the engine has started.
