Ultrathin membranes for separating substances are obtained by exposing shaped articles comprising a water-soluble polymer or a mixture of a water-soluble polymer and water-insoluble polymer to a plasma of a gas selected from helium, argon, nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, ammonia, a hydrocarbon having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, an epoxide having 2 to 10 carbon atoms, or an alkylamine, or a mixture of these substances to crosslink the surface layer, and then washing the exposed articles with water to remove the unreacted portions. The membrane exhibits outstanding performance characteristics when used in the processes for separating or concentrating substances, such as reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, and the like.

An improved process for producing a photo-curable composite material using a liquid photo-curable resin, which comprises holding a liquid photo-curable resin with a screen material between two films, at least one of the films having photo-transmitting properties, and passing the films holding the liquid photo-curable resin and the screen material through a gap (e.g. between two rollers). The process of the present invention can produce photo-curable composite materials useful for preparing various stencils for screen printing, textile printing, or the like at a low cost and with less production of defects.

The photo-polymerizable resin composition includes, as its major ingredients, either polymer, polyfunctional monomer (10-90% by weight, preferably 30-70% by weight, and having viscosity of at least 10.sup.3 poise at transferring temperature), photo-sensitizer and thermal polymerization inhibitor, or cross-linkable polymer (having at least 1000 molecular weight and double bonds at least one for each 1000 molecular weight), monomer (5-50% by weight, preferably 10-40% by weight), photosensitizer and thermal polymerization inhibitor.
