A polymer electrolyte fuel cell system is disclosed, comprising a fuel cell having a predetermined power generation portion configured to operate at a predetermined temperature to generate an electric power using a fuel gas and an oxidizing gas supplied to said fuel cell, and a humidifier configured to humidify the fuel gas and the oxidizing gas, wherein the humidifier is configured to humidify the fuel gas and the oxidizing gas to allow the fuel gas and the oxidizing gas to have dew points higher than the predetermined temperature, the humidified fuel gas and oxidizing gas having the dew points higher than the operating temperature being supplied to the fuel cell.

A mold for a use of making a fuel cell separator comprises: a first flow path forming portion to form a cooling medium flowing path, or to form an oxidizing gas flowing path, or to form a fuel gas flowing path; and an injection gate to shoot out a forming material settled on the first flow path, and/or disposed at near place with the first flow path.

Fuel cell separator

A polymer electrolyte fuel cell is provided with a conductive separator having one or more gas flow channels for supplying and exhausting a gas to and from an electrode of the fuel cell. The gas flow channels are connected to and in fluid communication with an inlet manifold on the separator. The cell also includes a gas supply connection in fluid communication with the inlet manifold of the separator. Water accumulation in the cell can be advantageously reduced by configuring the connections to the inlet manifold so that the lowermost part of any gas flow channel connections with the inlet manifold is above the uppermost part of the gas supply connection to the inlet manifold.

Polymer electrolyte fuel cell

A hydrogen purifying apparatus and method are provided for oxidizing and removing carbon monoxide (CO) in a modified gas containing CO in addition to a main component hydrogen gas. The apparatus and method use comprises a catalyst reaction segment having a catalyst layer for oxidizing CO, a material gas supplying segment for supplying the modified gas to the reaction segment via a material gas supply pathway, and an oxidant gas supplying segment for supplying an oxidant gas on the path of the material gas supply pathway. Preferably, the apparatus further comprises means for cooling the catalyst layer at the upstream side and means for heating the catalyst layer at the downstream side.

Method for purifying hydrogen in a reformed gas

A polymer electrolyte fuel cell has an MEA-gasket assembly including an MEA having a polymer electrolyte membrane, a pair of catalyst layers, and a pair of gas diffusion electrodes, and a pair of gaskets provided on peripheral portions of surfaces on both sides of the MEA with gaps between the respectively adjacent gaskets and gas diffusion electrodes. A pair of electrically conductive separators is disposed to sandwich the MEA-gasket assembly with groove-shaped cell reaction gas passages on inner surfaces of the separators, each of the cell reaction gas passages running sequentially across a first portion of a respective gasket of the pair of gaskets, a first portion of a respective gap of the gaps, a respective gas diffusion electrode of the pair of gas diffusion electrodes, a second portion of the respective gap, and a second portion of the respective gasket. Each of the gaps is at least partially closed by a closure.

The polymer electrolyte fuel cell of the present invention is equipped with a cell having an MEA having a hydrogen ion-conducting polymer electrolyte membrane and an anode and a cathode sandwiching the polymer electrolyte membrane; a platelike anode-side separator positioned on one side of the MEA so that the front surface thereof contacts the anode, with fuel gas passages through which fuel gas flows being formed in the front surface; and a platelike cathode-side separator positioned on the other side of the MEA so that the front surface thereof contacts the cathode, with oxidizing gas passages through which oxidizing gas flows being formed in the front surface; a cell stack in which a plurality of said cells is stacked; and a cooling water flow passage, through which cooling water flows, formed on at least the rear surface of one from among the anode-side separator and the cathode-side separator of at least a prescribed cell in said cell stack; where said fuel gas, oxidizing gas, and cooling water flow through said fuel gas passage, oxidizing gas passage, and cooling water passage, respectively, in a manner not running counter to gravity.

A fuel cell electric power generating system is provided which does not occupy a large space, which requires a lower initial cost for equipment than the prior art, and of which the running cost is low. The system includes a reformer producing hydrogen-rich gas by utilizing a source gas, source gas supplying means of supplying the source gas to the reformer, air supplying means of supplying purging air to the reformer, and a fuel cell generating electric power by utilizing the hydrogen-rich gas produced at the reformer and air for electric power generation supplied from outside, wherein in stopping the operation of the fuel cell, the supply of the source gas to the reformer is stopped and the hydrogen-rich gas remaining within the fuel cell electric power generating system, steam and the purging air are passed in this order.

Fuel cell electric power generating system and method of stopping fuel cell electric power generation

A highly reliable polymer electrolyte fuel cell includes an anode-side separator plate and a cathode-side separator plate that are provided with an anode-side sealing member and a cathode-side sealing member, respectively. The anode-side and cathode-side sealing members seal the cell in cooperation with a polymer electrolyte membrane at sealing parts where the anode-side and cathode-side sealing members are opposed to each other, thereby preventing gas from leaking out of gas flow channels. One of the anode-side and cathode-side sealing members has a pointed rib that comes in contact with the sealing parts in a linear manner, and the other sealing member comes in contact with the sealing parts surface to surface.

In order to provide a step capable of reliably detecting a CO concentration in a reformed gas at low cost and a hydrogen purifier capable of fully exerting a function of a CO purifying catalyst, a gas concentration detector comprising a reaction chamber which has a catalyst layer and a gas temperature detector and capable of detecting the concentration of carbon monoxide in the gas by means of a signal of the temperature detector referring to a reformed gas passing along through the reaction chamber.

It was difficult to acquire a good CO cleanup efficiency in a hydrogen refining apparatus, for instance, when the start-up and stop operations are frequently repeated. A hydrogen refining apparatus, including a shifter having a shifting catalyst body containing noble metals and metal oxides, and a reforming section for supplying hydrogen gas containing carbon monoxide to the shifter, (1) the temperature of an upstream side of the shifting catalyst body relative to the hydrogen gas flow being substantially between 300&#xb0; C. and 500&#xb0; C. and (2) the temperature of a downstream side of the shifting catalyst body relative to the hydrogen gas flow being substantially at 300&#xb0; C. or less.

Hydrogen refining apparatus

A configuration of an electrolyte membrane for a fuel cell is provided, which can be sealed reliably and easily between the separators. The sealing configuration is between the separators and between a peripheral portion of the electrolyte membrane and the respective separators. The sealing configuration includes a frame having an elastic modulus of greater than about 2,000 MPa and less than about 2,000,000 MPa and an elastic body having an elastic modulus of greater than 0 MPa and less than about 200 MPa. In one embodiment, the separators or portions thereof may themselves constitute the at least one elastic body. In another embodiment, the electrolyte membrane may be held by two frames lying on opposite sides of the electrolyte membrane, with the at least one elastic body arranged between the first and second frames sandwiching the membrane and also between the frames and the respective separators.

Conventional hydrogen purification apparatuses cannot be used satisfactorily for applications in which much time is required for startup of the apparatus, and the apparatus is repeatedly started and stopped at frequent intervals because of complicated handling. In a hydrogen purification apparatus comprising at least a catalysis body removing carbon monoxide from a reformed gas containing hydrogen, carbon monoxide and steam, the catalyst body is constituted by a carrier comprised of a complex oxide in which at least one of Mo, W and Re is compounded with Zr, or comprised of an oxide of one of Mo, W, Re and Zr, and at least one of Pt, Pd, Rh and Ru carried on the surface of the carrier.

In a hydrogen generator comprising a reforming unit having a material supply unit and a water supply unit, and a burner for heating the reforming unit, having a fuel supply unit and an air supply unit, a control unit is arranged for controlling the amount of air to be supplied from the air supply unit to the burner, based on the temperature of the reforming unit and the amount of a raw material supplied to the reforming unit, in order to make the combustion state of the burner stable so as to improves the operation and convenience thereof.
