In a quantification method for an electrode material, information regarding a distribution of a material in an electrode is obtained. Information regarding a distribution of resistance in the electrode is obtained. A scatter diagram is produced based on the information regarding the distribution of the material and the information regarding the distribution of the resistance. The scatter diagram is divided into a plurality of regions. The material constituting the electrode is quantified based on the divided regions.

Quantification method and quantification apparatus for electrode material

A fuel cell system includes a fuel cell stack, an oxygen-containing gas supply apparatus, a fuel gas supply apparatus, a pressure reduction apparatus, and a dilution apparatus. The oxygen-containing gas supply apparatus supplies an oxygen-containing gas to the fuel cell stack. The oxygen-containing gas supply apparatus is capable of supplying the air to the fuel gas flow field at the time of stopping operation of the fuel cell system. An electrolyte membrane/electrode structure constituting a fuel cell comprises a solid polymer electrolyte membrane, an anode side electrode and a cathode side electrode sandwiching the solid polymer electrolyte membrane. The anode side electrode is provided with an electrode catalyst layer and a gas diffusion layer abutting on one side of the solid polymer electrolyte membrane and exposing the outer circumference thereof in the shape of a frame, and the cathode side electrode is provided with an electrode catalyst layer and a gas diffusion layer abutting on the other side of the solid polymer electrolyte membrane. A reinforcing sheet member is arranged on the frame-shaped surface of the solid polymer electrolyte membrane projecting from the outer circumference of the gas diffusion layer.

A separator assembly for a fuel cell stack includes a diffusion layer including a porous metal body for diffusing and supplying fuel or oxidizer to an electrode of the fuel cell stack, and a separator including a metal plate which is disposed adjacent to the diffusion layer, and which is provided for separating the fuel and the oxidizer from each other. The diffusion layer and the separator are welded together by laser welding. Flow passage partitions of the metal forming the diffusion layer, which are formed by melting the metal by irradiation by a laser beam and by solidifying the metal, may be formed in the diffusion layer so as to define a flow passage for the fuel or oxidizer in the diffusion layer.

A polymer electrolyte fuel cell has a catalytic layer comprising a material and a polymer electrolyte, and the catalytic layer contains a fibrous material such as carbon whiskers or hydrophilic fibers. The polymer electrolyte fuel cell in the present invention having a catalytic layer comprising a catalytic material, an ion conducting material, an electron conducting material, and a void forming agent, and voids having diameters of from 60 to 1000 nm in the catalytic layer has a void volume of from 0.15 to 0.25 cm/g.
