A cylindrical roller bearing includes a flanged outer race having two inwardly extending flanges. One of the flanges is a flange ring separate from the outer race and fixed to the outer race. Cylindrical rollers are mounted between the outer race and a flangeless inner race, and retained by a retainer which are located radially inwardly of the pitch circle of the cylindrical rollers. With this arrangement, it is not necessary to reduce the widths of pillars of the retainer even if the load capacity is increased by increasing the size or the number of the cylindrical rollers, so that it is possible to increase the load capacity while ensuring strength of the retainer. Also, even if the inner race is separated from the bearing, it is possible to prevent separation of the cylindrical rollers as well as the retainer, which retains the cylindrical rollers, from the outer race.

A double-row self-aligning roller bearing includes left and right rows of rollers, arranged between an inner race and an outer race. A raceway surface of the outer race represents a spherical shape and the rollers have an outer peripheral surface following the shape of the raceway surface of the outer race. The rollers of the left and right roller rows have respective lengths different from each other. Also, the left and right roller rows have respective contact angles different from each other.

A solid lubrication type self-aligning roller bearing is low in frictional torque and high in high-speed rotation performance. Only the space between fingers of the retainer protruding into the spaces between the outer ring and adjacent rollers arranged in two rows is filled with a lubricating composition manufactured by solidifying a mixture of an ultra-high-molecular-weight polyolefin and a grease to reduce the number of contact portions of the solid lubricating composition with the outer ring and the rollers. It is thus possible to considerably reduce torque and heat buildup due to sliding friction at the contact portions.
