There is provided a production method of a lithium-containing composite oxide capable of improving performances of cycle characteristics, rate characteristics, and the like of a lithium ion secondary battery. A production method of a lithium-containing composite oxide is characterized in that when producing a lithium-containing composite oxide by mixing a transition metal hydroxide containing Ni and Mn essentially and a lithium source and heating the mixture, a transition metal hydroxide having a crystallite diameter of the (100) plane being 35 nm or less in a crystal structure model in the space group P-3m1 of an X-ray diffraction pattern is used.

To provide a lithium-containing composite oxide capable of obtaining a lithium ion secondary battery having a large discharge capacity wherein the deterioration of the discharge voltage due to repetition of a charge and discharge cycle is suppressed, a cathode active material, a positive electrode for a lithium ion secondary battery and a lithium ion secondary battery. To provide a cathode active material for a lithium ion secondary battery excellent in the cycle characteristics and rate characteristics even when charging is conducted at a high voltage. A cathode active material for a lithium ion secondary battery, which comprises particles (III) having a covering layer comprising a metal oxide (I) containing at least one metal element selected from the group consisting of elements in Groups 3 and 13 of the periodic table and lanthanoid elements, and a compound (II) containing Li and P, on the surface of a lithium-containing composite oxide comprising lithium and a transition metal element, wherein the atomic ratio of said P to said metal element (P/metal element) contained within 5 nm of the surface layer of the particles (III) is from 0.03 to 0.45.

Cathode active material for lithium ion secondary battery, and process for its production

A production process which comprises contacting a lithium-containing composite oxide containing Li element and a transition metal element with a composition (1) {an aqueous solution containing cation M having at least one metal element (m)} and a composition (2) {an aqueous solution containing anion N having at least one element (n) selected from the group consisting of S, P, F and B, forming a hardly soluble salt when reacted with the cation M}, wherein the total amount A (mL/100 g) of the composition (1) and the composition (2) contacted per 100 g of the lithium-containing composite oxide is in a ratio of 0.1&#x3c;A/B&#x3c;5 based on the oil absorption B (mL/100 g) of the lithium-containing composite oxide.

Process for producing lithium-containing composite oxide for positive electrode for lithium secondary battery

The present invention provides a lithium-containing composite oxide for a positive electrode for a lithium secondary battery, which has a large volume capacity density and high safety, and excellent durability for charge and discharge cycles and charge and discharge rate property, and its production method. The lithium-containing composite oxide is represented by the general formula LiNMOF(where N is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Co, Mn and Ni, M is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Al, Sn, alkaline earth metal elements and transition metal elements other than Co, Mn and Ni, 0.9&#x2266;p&#x2266;1.2, 0.965&#x2266;x&#x3c;2.00, 0&#x3c;y&#x2266;0.035, 1.9&#x2266;z&#x2266;4.2, and 0&#x2266;a&#x2266;0.05), wherein when a powder of the lithium-containing composite oxide is classified into small particles with an average particle size of 2 &#x3bc;m&#x2266;Ds&#x2266;8 &#x3bc;m and large particles with an average particle size of 10 &#x3bc;m&#x2266;Dl&#x2266;25 &#x3bc;m, a content of the small particles is from 15 to 40% by weight and a content of the large particles is from 60 to 85% by weight, and 0.01&#x2266;ys&#x2266;0.06, 0&#x2266;yl&#x2266;0.02 and 0&#x2266;yl/ys&#x3c;1, where (ys) is a ratio of the M element in the above general formula in the small particles and (yl) is a ratio of the M element in the general formula in the large particles.

To provide a process for producing a surface modified lithium-containing composite oxide, which is excellent in discharge capacity, volume capacity density, safety, durability for charge and discharge cycles and an excellent rate property, at a low production cost. The present invention is characterized in that a process for producing a surface modified lithium-containing composite oxide, wherein a lithium titanium composite oxide is contained in the surface layer of particles of a lithium-containing composite oxide represented by the formula: LiNMOF, where N is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Co, Mn and Ni, M is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Al, Sn, alkaline earth metal elements and transition metal elements other than Co, Mn and Ni, 0.9&#x2266;p&#x2266;1.3, 0.9&#x2266;x&#x2266;2.0, 0&#x2266;y&#x2266;0.1, 1.9&#x2266;z&#x2266;4.2, and 0&#x2266;a&#x2266;0.05, which comprises impregnating a solution having a lithium source and a titanium source dissolved therein, followed by heat treatment at a determined temperature, to obtain the surface modified lithium-containing composite oxide, wherein the titanium contained in the surface layer is from 0.01 to 1.95 mol %.
