A brake device for vehicles applying brake power to a wheel through actuation of a disc brake by an output hydraulic pressure from a master cylinder, wherein an inertial type wheel angular deceleration sensor driven by the wheel through a transmission device is incorporated in an antilock control unit adapted to control the output hydraulic pressure of the master cylinder, the disc brake and the transmission device are enclosed in an annular recess open to one side of the wheel, and a caliper of the brake and the antilock control unit are supported on a fixed panel disposed so as to close an opening of the annular recess.

An antilock brake device for vehicles including a sensor for sensing the possibility of wheel lock during braking by means of overrunning rotation of a flywheel interlocked with the wheel to produce an output and a hydraulic controller for reducing the braking hydraulic pressure of the wheel brake upon reception of the output from the sensor and increasing the braking hydraulic pressure when the output from the sensor is eliminated. The flywheel and a transmission for transmitting the rotation of the wheel to the flywheel are arranged in the hollow portion of a hub of the wheel. Transmission mechanisms are employed to separate components within the hub to further reduce the overall size of the system. A variety of embodiments also disclose cooperation between front and rear brakes to improve braking response and efficiency.

A hand-operated lever for operating a control member, such as the master cylinder of the braking system for a motorcycle, is mounted on the handle grip thereof in a manner to permit adjustment of the lever with respect to the handle grip. The lever is resiliently biased with respect to the control member in order to eliminate 'dead travel' from lever operation and to prevent dislodgement of the lever from its adjusted position due to vibration or jarring of the motorcycle.

A front suspension for a vehicle having a pair of swing arms and steering arm. The swing arms are mounted to the steering arm in a manner such that savings in weight and material are realized. The swing arms are pivotally mounted forwardly at upper and lower locations on said steering arm and pivotally mounted rearwardly on the vehicle, said forward mounting location of said upper swing arm being outside the circumference of the front wheel and said forward mounting location of said lower swing arm being above and rearward of the front wheel axle, said upper and lower swing arms extending upwardly from said rearward mounting locations. Accordingly, the front wheel can take a wide steering angle and the swing arm does not become too heavy.

Front suspension for a vehicle

A four-wheel drive vehicle having straddle-type seating. A power train is located beneath the seat and between the footpegs of the vehicle, the engine employs parallel output shafts located on either side of the crankshaft to drive power transmission means to the front and rear axles. A speed change mechanism is contained within the engine case along with the output shafts and includes a first transmission shaft between the crankshaft and one of the output shafts. The arrangement of the frame is such that the upper portion of the frame is narrower than the lower portion of the frame for appropriate rider comfort and footpeg location. The wheels are located such that the front and rear tracks are substantially the same and diagonals between the wheel centers cross close to the center of gravity of the vehicle. The cushion assemblies of the vehicle are inclined to increase cushion stroke and the steering assembly is arranged with crossing tie bars for maximum steering control with minimum mechanical complexity.

Four-wheel drive vehicle

A motorcycle having front and rear swing arm suspension systems. The motorcycle includes a structural frame including as a structural element the engine of the vehicle along with a support member. The front and rear suspensions are disclosed as being pivotally mounted to the support member. The cushion members are shown mounted to either the support member or directly to the engine. At the other end of the cushion members, progressive linkage mechanisms are employed.

Suspension system for motorcycles

A three-wheeled vehicle has a pair of right and left wheels provided at either end of the vehicle body and a single wheel provided at the other end of the vehicle body. The pair of wheels are spaced from each other laterally with respect to the vehicle body. The three-wheeled vehicle is further provided with a steering mechanism for steering the pair of wheels, and a mechanism which cooperates with the steering mechanism for displacing the single wheel substantially laterally with respect to the vehicle body and in the direction opposite to the direction of turning of the vehicle caused by the steering operation of the steering mechanism. In another embodiment the single wheel is also pivoted in a direction opposite the turning of the pair of wheels.

A rear wheel braking apparatus for a motorcycle wherein a rear fork with a rear wheel pivotally mounted on the rear end thereof is coupled to the frame of the motorcycle via a pivot shaft in a vertically swingable manner; a rear wheel drive device for coupling between the output shaft of an engine on the frame and the rear wheel is provided side by side with the rear fork; an anti-lock controlling unit for controlling the braking hydraulic pressure to be fed to the rear brake in response to the output from a built-in sensor is provided on the rear fork in the vicinity of the pivot shaft; and wherein the drive shaft of the sensor is coupled to the rear wheel drive device.

Rear wheel braking apparatus for motorcycle

An anti-lock brake system employing an anti-lock control unit between a brake master cylinder and a front wheel brake. The brake system is applied to a damped telescopic front fork and includes an anti-dive device which operates to increase damping force upon application of braking force to the front brake. In a first embodiment, the anti-dive device operates from hydraulic pressure upstream of the anti-lock brake unit. In a second embodiment, reaction force to braking of the wheel is sensed and employed to actuate the anti-dive device.

Anti-lock braking system for the front wheel of a motorcycle

A braking device for a vehicle comprises a brake for applying brake power to a wheel and an anti-lock control unit having an inertia type wheel angular deceleration sensor built therein which is driven by the wheel, the antilock control unit controlling the brake hydraulic pressure for the brake in accordance with the output of the sensor. In this braking device, the brake and the antilock control unit are disposed such that they stand opposite each other on the right and left sides of the wheel.

A braking system employing an antilock device which has two brake actuating mechanisms responsive to input hydraulic pressure through the antilock device. Valves are provided in the control mechanism for a second brake actuating mechanism which provide hydraulic cylinders for controlling the brake mechanism. The hydraulic cylinder of such a valve is vented until the controlling hydraulic system reaches a minimum pressure level. This pressure level is determined to be above that of the residual pressure level of the antilock mechanism. In a first embodiment, direct hydraulic control is provided to the multiple brake actuating mechanisms. In the second preferred embodiment, the reaction force to braking of the first brake actuating mechanism controls the brake pressure through a second master cylinder to the second brake actuating mechanism.
