The zoom speed of a zoom function is detected by a zoom lever detection circuit. A sensed image is displayed on a monitor, and a desired partial region in that sensed image is designated using a region designation lever. A compression circuit compresses the designated region and a non-designated region using different characteristics. A region detector controls the designated region on the basis of the detected zoom speed. In another arrangement, enlargement/reduction zoom operation by a zoom function is executed by a zoom lever. A sensed image is displayed on a monitor, and a desired partial region in that sensed image is designated using a region designation lever. A compression circuit compresses the designated region and a non-designated region using different characteristics. A region detector controls the designated region on the basis of the zoom operation.

A rotary drum assembly is arranged so that upper and lower drums can rotate about a central shaft with respect to each other via a dynamic-pressure bearing. In the rotary drum assembly, the central shaft is press-fitted into the rotary upper drum, a sleeve which is formed so that the central shaft can be rotatably fitted thereinto is supported by the fixed lower drum, and a dynamic-pressure generating groove is formed in either one of the central shaft and the sleeve, whereby a dynamic-pressure bearing is formed between the central shaft and the sleeve.

An apparatus for recording and/or reproducing information on or from a tape includes a rotary drum unit having a rotary drum which has at least one head and a fixed drum which is arranged to rotatably support the rotary drum, and a loading member arranged to wrap the tape around the outer circumferential surfaces of the rotary drum and the fixed drum. The rotary drum unit is arranged such that, at a tape wrapping start point where the tape begins to be wrapped around the rotary drum, an upper end part of the rotary drum is located between an upper edge of the tape at the tape wrapping start point and an end part of a recording track formed as an effective signal recording area on the tape.
