A modified polyolefin resin comprising a copolymer having a structure that a propylene-based polyolefin segment (a) and a segment (b) containing a lactic acid as a constituent are bonded in a block state and/or a graft state through a vinyl monomer having a hydroxyl group, wherein a number average molecular weight of the propylene-based polyolefin segment (a) is from 1,000 to 100,000, a number average molecular weight of the segment (b) containing lactic acid as a constituent is from 1,000 to 200,000, and a weight composition of the propylene-based polyolefin segment (a) and the segment (b) containing lactic acid as a constituent is from 10/90 to 90/10. The modified polyolefin resin can be used in a resin composition containing an aliphatic polyester resin (A), a polyolefin resin (B) and the modified polyolefin resin (C). The composition can exhibit excellent heat resistance and impact resistance and can be used for molding various parts.

A biodegradable aliphatic polyester elastomer which has rubber-like elasticity, hardness of 80 or less in accordance with ASTM D 676-58T, and elastic modulus from 1.times.10.sup.5 Pa to 1.times.10.sup.8 Pa at 25.degree. C., and decomposes with ease in the natural environment, under composting conditions or under hydrolysis conditions. Formed products such as foams, fabrics for industrial materials, filaments, nonwoven fabrics, composite materials and films which are degradable after use with ease in the natural environment are prepared by using a high molecular weight aliphatic polyester obtained by direct polycondensation of an aliphatic polyhydric alcohol with aliphatic polybasic acid or additionally hydroxycarboxylic acid or oligomers of these materials in a reaction mixture containing a solvent. Foams have excellent thermal insulation and strength; fabrics are excellent in thermal insulation, strength and elongation and can be used for industrial materials; filaments have sufficient strength, flexibility and degradability in a living body and can be used for bioabsorbable surgical filament and fishing lines; nonwoven fabrics can be obtained by bonding a web of filaments and have excellent strength and feeling; composite materials can be prepared by adhering or impregnating fiber, paper, film and others of cellulosics and have excellent strength and water resistance, good flexibility and folding resistance, simultaneously have degradability in the natural environment, and can dissolve polymer films on the surface with ease under alkaline conditions to recover cellulosics alone; and films are excellent in heat resistance and strength.

A preparation process of aliphatic polyester having a weight average molecular weight of 15,000 or more by conducting a direct polycondensation reaction of an aliphatic polyhydric alcohol or a mixed aliphatic polyhydric alcohol and an aliphatic polybasic acid or a mixed aliphatic polybasic acid, or additionally a hydroxycarboxylic acid or a mixed hydroxycarboxylic acid or an oligomer of the hydroxycarboxylic acid in a reaction mixture containing an organic solvent. The aliphatic polyester thus obtained contains an extremely small amount of impurities, has low color and can exhibit satisfactory strength in the form of films, filaments and other shaped articles.
