A sheet-postprocessing apparatus includes a sheet discharger which discharges sheets to a stacker, the stacker including a first tray adjacent to the discharger for supporting trailing portions of the sheets discharged by the discharger and a second tray for supporting leading portions of the sheets, the second tray being movable in a vertical direction and disposed downstream of the first tray with respect to a sheet discharge direction, the trays being inclined so that sheets stacked thereon slide by their own weight, such that a stack of sheets supported on both trays are stapled by a stapler, the stapled set of sheets then being pushed out of the first tray to be stacked entirely by the second tray. The sheet post-processing apparatus operates in two modes, a stapling mode and a non-stapling mode wherein sheets discharged by the discharger bypass the first tray and are supported entirely by the second downstream tray.

A sheet sorting apparatus with a stapler includes a plurality of bin trays which are arranged substantially vertically with predetermined clearances between adjacent bin trays, which are inclined to provide an inclined sheet receiving surfaces and which are independently movable substantially in the vertical direction, wherein the bin trays are so disposed that those ends of adjacent ones of the bin trays which are closer to the sheet inlet are deviated when seen in a direction substantially perpendicular to the sheet receiving surface; bin tray shifting device for moving the plurality of the bin trays stepwisely substantially in the vertical direction to oppose the respective bin trays to a sheet inlet of the sorting apparatus; stapling device, disposed substantially on an extension of the inclined sheet receiving surface and having a stapling head movable to above the sheet receiving surface and an anvil movable to below the sheet receiving surface, for stapling the sheets interposed between the stapling head and the anvil; and a second shifting device for shifting the bin tray immediately above the bin tray opposed to the stapling device in a direction increasing the deviation, wherein the stapling head is moved using a space provided by the deviation, and wherein the expanded clearance is smaller than a height of the stapling head.

A sheet original feeding apparatus comprises a sheet original stacking tray on which sheet originals to be treated are stacked as an original stack. A sheet original separator separates and supplies the sheet original one by one from the bottom of the original stack stacked on the sheet original stacking tray. A sheet original feeding path is provided for directing the sheet original separated by the sheet original separator. A sheet original feeder feeds in a forward direction the sheet original directed by the original feeding path to an image reading portion. The sheet original feeding means is also operable in a reverse direction, and the sheet original feeding path is arranged at one side of the sheet original feeder. A first sheet original ejecting path is further provided for returning the sheet original fed in the reverse direction by the sheet original feeder to the sheet original stacking tray from a same side of the sheet original feeder as the sheet original feeding path. A second sheet original ejecting path returns the sheet original fed in the forward direction by the sheet original feeder to the sheet original stacking tray. The second sheet original ejection path is arranged at a side opposite to the sheet original feeder means as the sheet original feeding path.

An original handling apparatus is provided with a conveyor, a setting circuit and a control system. The conveyor conveys an original in plural modes in which an original is scanned. The conveyor is operated in a first convey mode in which an original is fed to and stopped at a first position on a platen. After the scan is completed, the scanned original is fed to and stopped at a second position on the platen, and a next original is fed to and stopped at the first position on the platen. In the second convey mode, the original is fed to and stopped at the first position on the platen, and after scan is completed, the original is discharged from the first position. A next original is then fed to and stopped at the first position on the platen. The setting circuit sets either the first or second convey modes. The setting circuit enables the first convey mode to be set in a single-side mode wherein only one side of the original is scanned, and prohibits the first convey mode from being set in a dual-side mode wherein both sides of an original are scanned. A controller controls the conveyor to be operated in either the first or second convey mode in accordance with a setting signal from the setting circuit.
