A light emitting device is a light emitting device for use in a photodynamic therapy. The light emitting device includes: a solid-state light-emitting element that emits primary light in which an energy density is 0.5 W/mmor more; and a wavelength converter including a first phosphor that emits first wavelength-converted light. The first wavelength-converted light has a light component across at least a whole of a wavelength range of 700 nm or more and less than 800 nm. Energy of fluorescence emitted from the wavelength converter is 100 mW or more. A medical device includes the light emitting device.

A wavelength converter includes a first phosphor activated with Cr; and a second phosphor activated with at least one ion of Ceor Eu. A fluorescence spectrum of a fluorescence emitted by the second phosphor has a peak where a fluorescence intensity shows a maximum value in a wavelength range of 500 nm or more to less than 580 nm. The wavelength converter emits a fluorescence having a light component over an entire range of 500 nm or more to less than 580 nm. The wavelength converter emits a light having a spectrum in which a ratio of a minimum light emission intensity to a maximum light emission intensity is 40% or less in a wavelength range of 550 nm or more to 700 nm or less.

When an energy conversion value at a peak wavelength of the primary light is Eelectron volts and an energy conversion value at a fluorescence peak wavelength of the first wavelength-converted light is Eelectron volts, a bandgap energy of a crystal of the simple oxide is larger than a sum of the Eelectron volts and the Eelectron volts.

The garnet silicate includes primary particles having a particle shape derived from a crystal structure of garnet. Moreover, the garnet silicate further contains alkaline metal including at least lithium, in which a content of the alkaline metal is less than 2000 ppm. The garnet silicate phosphor includes garnet silicate and ions which are included in the garnet silicate and function as a light emission center.
