A fishing reel includes: a reel body; a spool rotatably supported by the reel body; a handle shaft rotatably supported by the reel body; a handle arm provided at a distal end of the handle shaft; a transmission mechanism that transmits a rotation of the handle shaft to the spool via a drag device capable of adjusting braking force; and a braking force controlling element rotatably supported by the handle shaft, the braking force controlling element including an adjusting portion for adjusting the braking force applied to the drag device and an operation portion for the adjusting portion. The operation portion radially extends from an axis center of the handle shaft, and includes a bent portion which is formed at an intermediate portion of the operation portion and bent toward the reel body side.

A fishing reel of a double bearing type includes a clutch member having an engaging portion which, during the movement of the clutch member between its rotation force transmission position and rotation force cut-off position, is caused to move along the inner peripheral surface of a bearing, wherein the engaging portion of the clutch member is structured such that, during the above movement, it is situated in the range of the inner peripheral surface of the bearing in a direction extending along the rotation axis of the spool shaft, and further wherein a clutch engaged portion engaged with the engaging portion is also structured such that it is situated in the range of the inner peripheral surface of the bearing in the direction extending along the rotation axis of the spool shaft.

In a fishing reel, a rotary body (a drive gear) has an accommodating section at the center which includes a round hole and a recess. The accommodating section accommodates the thick annular liner of a brake member in a brake device, and the detection brake body. The liner is made of felt, cork, leather or fiber-reinforced synthetic resin. The detection brake body is in the form of a disk, and is mounted on a shaft, which is a handle shaft. The bottom surface of the recess of the rotary body is formed into the uneven portion. The detection brake body has a through-hole, to which one end portion of the detecting piece is secured, for instance, by spot welding, and the other end portion of the detecting piece is extended so as to be engageable with the uneven portion. When the liner is worn out to a predetermined value, the detecting piece is contacted and engaged with the uneven portion to generate a sound.

A double bearing type reel for fishing is provided which can protect a level wind device more positively and can simplify an assembling operation. The double bearing type reel for fishing includes a reel main body having a frame body (1). The frame body (1) includes two right and left side frames (1', 2). The right and left side frames (1', 2) are formed integrally with each other by a support rod (a), a thumb placement portion (1'), a protection portion (2'), a reel leg (2s), and a fixed plate (2'), while the two side frames (1', 2) are held parallel to each other. Reel side plates (3, 4) are respectively mounted to the outer sides of the two right and left side frames (1', 2). A level wind device (A) and a spool (5) are respectively interposed between the right and left side frames (1', 2). The reel outer side plates (3, 4) respectively include in the front portions thereof extension portions (3a, 4a) which extend toward each other.

In a double bearing type reel for fishing, an engaging portion is formed in a spool shaft which can be engaged with an engaging portion formed in a pinion gear slidably fitted with the spool shaft. Further, chamfered surfaces which widen outwardly from each of two boundary lines between mutually opposing cylindrical peripheral surfaces and mutually opposing slitted portions of the engaging portion are provided. The engaging operation of the pinion gear can be executed smoothly due to the rotation action of the pinion gear as well as due to the induction actions of the chamfered portions.

Clutch mechanism for a double bearing type reel for fishing

A handle piece of a blind-hole construction with a closed axial outer end is fitted on a support shaft, fixedly secured to an end of a handle arm, in an axial direction from an outer end of the support shaft. A handle piece-side retaining portion and a support shaft-side retaining portion, which cooperate with each other to retain the handle piece relative to the support shaft, are provided on the handle piece and the support shaft, respectively. When the handle piece is fitted on the support shaft in the axial direction, the handle piece is retained relative to the support shaft by the two retaining portions, thereby enhancing the mounting operation.

A fishing reel having a clutch mechanism including end planes (7g, 7i) formed, respectively, next to engaging recesses (7e, 7f) with which an engaging protrusion (8) rotated in the fishing line releasing direction comes into impact contact. The end planes (7g, 7i) form an increased thickness portion which enhances the mechanical strength of the engaging recesses (7e, 7f). Since the mechanical strength of the engaging recesses (7e, 7f) is enhanced, edge portions of the engaging recesses (7e, 7f) are not deformed or scraped away by the impact force caused when the engaging protrusion (8) collides with the engaging recesses (7e, 7f). Therefore, it is possible for the engaging protrusion (8) to engage the pinion engaging recesses (7e, 7f) smoothly, normally and positively.
