Control method and control apparatus of hybrid vehicle

A fail-safe control device is provided for hybrid vehicles which allows a travel distance of a vehicle to be extended in an event of an ON-failure of a second clutch. An integrated controller switches between an HEV mode and an EV mode by controlling a first clutch between an engine and a motor, and a second clutch between the motor and a continuously variable transmission. The integrated controller prohibits the transition from the HEV mode to the EV mode when a clutch failure determination unit detects an ON-failure of the second clutch while the vehicle is traveling in the HEV mode.

An automatic transmission has a transmission control section performing a control so that a transmission ratio defined as input rpm/output rpm of the automatic transmission becomes a target transmission ratio, a slip control section slip-controlling a frictional engagement element in the automatic transmission so that the input rpm becomes a value obtained by multiplying the output rpm by the target transmission ratio also adding a predetermined slip revolution speed; and an abnormality judgment section judging abnormality in the automatic transmission. When the slip-control is not in progress, if an actual transmission ratio is out of a predetermined range of the target transmission ratio, the abnormality judgment section judges that abnormality occurs. When the slip-control is in progress, if a value obtained by correcting the actual transmission ratio on the basis of the slip revolution speed is out of the predetermined range, the abnormality judgment section judges that abnormality occurs.

A drive train for a hybrid electric vehicle has an engine, first and second motor/generators, a third motor, and a transmission in connecting relationships with the engine, the motor/generators, and the third motor. The transmission has planetary gear sets to be shifted among a plurality of running modes including a large driving force running mode. A controller controls surplus power caused by power balance between the first and second motor/generators to be supplied to the third motor when the surplus power is generated and the vehicle starts with the transmission being operated in the large driving force running mode.
