An electrical operating device for a bicycle includes a brake control device adapted to be mounted to a handlebar of the bicycle and a switching device integrated with the brake control device. The brake control device includes a first operating member that moves along a first path for controlling the operation of a brake, and the switching device outputs electrical signals in response to movement of the switching device along a second path different from the first path.

A bicycle control device includes a base member adapted to be mounted to a structural member of a bicycle, a dial rotatably mounted to the base member, a detent mechanism operatively associated with the dial for providing a detenting force to the dial at a plurality of rotational positions of the dial, and a first electrical contact member operated by the dial for selectively electrically communicating with a second electrical contact member when the dial is positioned at each of the plurality of rotational positions. A button and/or display may be disposed in proximity to the dial to allow the rider to control the bicycle transmission and to view the status of the selected gears, respectively.

A brake operating apparatus includes a brake member bracket for attachment to a handlebar, wherein the brake member bracket includes a concave inner surface defining a switch mounting recess. A brake member such as a brake lever is movably attached to the brake member bracket, and the switch mounting recess is structured for mounting an electrical switch therein. Since the switch is mounted within a recess in the brake member bracket, the switch does not project excessively from the brake member bracket. A flexible cover is disposed on the brake member bracket to cover the first and second push buttons. Since the push buttons project slightly from the brake member bracket, the flexible cover includes a first protrusion disposed over the first push button and a second protrusion disposed over the second push button. To help the rider distinguish between the two push buttons, the first protrusion is shaped differently from the second protrusion.

A shifting apparatus for a bicycle includes a fixed shaft, a takeup element rotatable about an axis of the fixed shaft to wind a control cable thereon, a shift lever for rotating the takeup element, and an indicator. The indicator includes a rotatable member interlocked to the takeup element to be rotatable about a rotational axis, and a fixed member for a speed stage of a change gear device based on a displacement relative to the rotatable member. The rotational axis of the rotatable member extends at an angle to the axis of the fixed shaft. At least a portion of the indicator is present on an extension of the axis of the fixed shaft.
