When transparency information (T) is externally inputted along with RGB image data (DV1), the RGB image data (DV1) is converted to YUV image data (DV2) in YUV422 formal, and the transparency information (T) is added to information about a color-difference component U or V therein, thereby generating YUV image data (DV3) to be inputted to a signal processing portion (). The signal processing portionextracts the transparency information (T) and converts the YUV image data (DV2) to RGB image data (DV1). When the RGB image data (DV1) and the transparency information (T) are inputted to an LCD timing controller (), the LCD timing controllerrenders a liquid crystal display panel () transparent on the basis of the transparency information (T), thereby allowing background light to be transmitted therethrough, or when only the RGB image data (DV1) is inputted, the liquid crystal display panel () displays an image.

Display device

An object of the present invention is to realize a liquid crystal display device of a field sequential system which is capable of preventing occurrence of color shift and flicker. One frame period is divided into a plurality of fields, the number of which is greater than the number of lighting patterns. Provided are a liquid crystal state value acquiring unit () configured to obtain a liquid crystal state value at an end time of a display field based on an input gradation value in the display field and a liquid crystal state value at an end time of a previous field (one field before the display field) (a gradation value corresponding to an aligned state of liquid crystal molecules), and an application gradation value acquiring unit () configured to obtain an application gradation value in the display field by correcting an input gradation value in the display field based on a liquid crystal state value at the end time of the previous field. The application gradation value acquiring unit () obtains an application gradation value such that display luminance in each field becomes display luminance corresponding to the input gradation value.

Liquid crystal display device and method of driving same

Conventionally, in a transparent display area, a gradation value of each color component is assigned to transparent gradation. Hence, when video is displayed in a video display area, each color component can only be represented in gradations with a gradation value of 0 to 1022, and it becomes necessary to assign pixel values to the transparent gradation. Accordingly, a color represented by those pixel values cannot be displayed. In view of this, by adding transparent area information to a vertical blanking period of a video signal, the pixel values can also be used to display video. By this, each of the color components can be represented in gradations with a gradation value of 0 to 1023, and thus, video can be displayed in full-range color even when a transparent display area is provided.

Liquid crystal display device

A display device employing a field sequential system is realized, that can transfer video data for field sequential among a plurality of substrates through a general standard interface. In a display device including a first circuit substrate () having a signal processing circuit (), and a second circuit substrate () having liquid crystal timing controllers (), the signal processing circuit () is provided with a signal separation circuit () configured to separate an input image signal (DIN) for one frame period into first intermediate data on a field basis, and a rearrangement circuit () configured to convert the first intermediate data to second intermediate data having a format depending on a standardized interface, and to rearrange the second intermediate data so that data for a plurality of rows is simulatively put together as data for one row, by which field data is generated.
