A medical adhesive comprises a hydrophilic urethane prepolymer (UP) obtained by reacting a fluorine-containing nonaromatic polyisocyanate component (A) and a polyol component (B) having a hydrophilic polyol (B), and a phenolic radical scavenger (PRS). The content of (PRS) is preferably 0.01 to 3% by weight based on the weight of (UP). The content of oxyethylene groups in (B) is preferably 30 to 100% by weight based on the weight of the oxyalkylene groups in (B). Preferably, (B) is a mixture of a random copolymer obtained by addition of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide to diols and polypropylene glycol. The content of isocyanate groups in the medical adhesive is 1 to 10% by weight based on the weight of (UP). The medical adhesive is suitable for bonding body tissues, such as lung, artery and heart in particular.

An infusion catheter having a catheter shaft with a distal end, an inflatable and contractible balloon provided adjacent the distal end but spaced therefrom, a blood passage with two openings for passing blood through the balloon, and first and second lumens. The first lumen communicating with the balloon to inflate and contract the balloon, and the second lumen including a medicine discharge port located between the balloon and one opening of the blood passage to supply medicine to a lesion part of a blood vessel.

Infusion catheter

A device for controlling cell arrangement having a pattern composed of a cell adhesive surface and a cell non-adhesive surface, which has a good selectivity of cell adhesion and which can provide a fine pattern of cells in high resolution by culturing cells in a usual manner. The device is prepared by a process which comprises applying a photosensitive, cell adhesive or cell non-adhesive polymer to a surface having a reverse cell adhesivity property to that of the applied polymer, and patternwise irradiating a light to the photosensitive polymer layer followed by development; a process which comprises patternwise irradiating UV or radiation to a cell non-adhesive surface to produce a cell adhesive functional group such as carboxyl group or amino group in the irradiated portion; or a process which comprises patternwise irradiating UV or radiation to a cell adhesive or non-adhesive surface made of plastics to produce a polymerization initiation site in the irradiated portion, and graft-polymerizing at least one monomer having the reverse cell adhesivity property to the plastic surface to produce a polymer on the irradiated portion of plastic surface.

An anti-thrombogenic substance is immobilized on a base of a medical device to impart anti-thrombogenic properties to the medical device. The method comprises the steps of applying a photo-reactive azide derivative macromolecular material to a base to form a bonding layer, coating the bonding layer with a macromolecular layer composed of a water-soluble photo-crosslinking macromolecular material containing the anti-thrombogenic substance, and irradiating the base with ultraviolet light with the bonding layer and the macromolecular layer formed thereon to develop inter-molecular covalent bonding in the bonding layer. The macromolecular layer containing the anti-thrombogenic substance is thus fixed onto the base. Concurrently, the anti-thrombogenic substance is immobilized in the macromolecular layer which is crosslinked. The azide derivative can be poly-m-azidostyrene, copolymers, of poly-m-aziodstyrene with styrene and copolymers of poly-m-azidostyrene with methyl methacrylate. The water-soluble photo-crosslinking macromolecular material can be a copolymer of a photo-dimeric monomer with a water-soluble monomer or a copolymer of a photo-reactive azide with a water-soluble monomer.

A process for modifying the surface of a material such as plastics, metals, glasses and ceramics which comprises the steps of (1) coating a compound having at least one azido group on the surface of the material to be modified, (2) making a modifier substance to be fixed for the modification exist on or in the coated surface, and (3) irradiating ultraviolet rays to the coated surface to fix the modifier substance to the coated surface, wherein various compounds can be used as the modifier for converting the characteristics of the material surface to the desired characteristics without previously treating them, and various materials can be easily modified with a firm fixing of the modifier.

The closing plug and the closing plug device are used for closing a body defect percutaneously. During the insertion into the defect, the closing plug can be deformed to a smaller size to facilitate the insertion operation and recovered to its original larger shape after it is fitted to the defect, to thereby close the defect. The closing plug has a flange or an enlarged portion at least at one end thereof and is made of a shape memory polymer having a shape recovery temperature in the range of 20.degree. C. to 70.degree. A medical device having a highly biocompatible surface wherein hydrophilic polymer is bonded onto a surface of the medical device covalently through a nitrogen atom, and a method for manufacturing a medical device having a highly biocompatible surface comprising the steps of applying a hydrophilic polymer having azido group and/or a composition comprising a compound having at least two azido group and a hydrophilic polymer onto the surface of the medical device, and irradiating the biocompatible material with light so that the hydrophilic polymer is bonded to the medical device surface. The device has sufficient biocompatibility, medical functional capability and economical efficiency. The method easily provides a medical device with sufficient biocompatibility without impairing the device's medical functional capability and economical efficiency.

An apparatus for separating a balloon from a catheter member of a balloon is capable of melting and breaking a heat-meltable connecting member through which the balloon is connected to the catheter body by causing an electric current to flow between at least a pair of electrodes arranged on or in the vicinity of the connecting member. The apparatus has impedance measuring means for measuring the impedance of an electrode circuit including a pair of electrodes and lead lines connected to the electrodes, and judging means for comparing the measured value of the impedance with a predetermined reference range and capable of producing an abnormal signal when the measured value of the impedance does not fall within the predetermined reference range. The apparatus enables the operator to judge whether the electrode circuit is in safe condition, before changing the balloon with a settable liquid and to charge a settable liquid into the balloon only when the safe condition of the electrode circuit is confirmed, so that the balloon after the setting of the liquid can be separated from the catheter body without fail, thus eliminating any risk for the catheter body to dangerously remain in the living body.
