An ultraviolet light emitting device includes: a first substrate; a second substrate; a gas in a space between the first substrate and the second substrate; electrodes directly or indirectly on a first main surface of the first substrate; a dielectric layer that is located in a first region directly or indirectly on the first main surface of the first substrate and covers the electrodes, the dielectric layer being not located in a second region directly or indirectly on the first main surface of the first substrate, the second region being different from the first region, the first region including regions in which the electrodes are located; and a light-emitting layer that is located in the second region and/or located directly or indirectly on at least one of second and third main surfaces of the second substrate and emits the ultraviolet light in the gas due to electrical discharge between the electrodes.

Ultraviolet light emitting device

An ultraviolet light emitting device comprises: a first substrate having a main surface; a second substrate facing the main surface of the first substrate; a gas in a space between the first substrate and the second substrate; electrodes directly or indirectly on the main surface of the first substrate; a dielectric layer that is located directly or indirectly on the main surface of the first substrate and covers the electrodes; and a first light-emitting layer. The first light-emitting layer is located directly or indirectly on the dielectric layer and emits ultraviolet light in the gas due to electrical discharge between the electrodes. The first light-emitting layer is thicker in first regions on the dielectric layer than in second regions. The second regions include at least part of regions directly above the electrodes.

Ultraviolet light emitting device that can suppress time-dependent decrease in emission intensity during continuous operation

An ultraviolet irradiation apparatus includes: a first substrate; a second substrate; electrodes disposed directly or indirectly on the first substrate; a dielectric layer covering the electrodes; a sealant joining together the first and second substrates; a light-emitting layer that is disposed directly or indirectly on the dielectric layer and/or a surface of the second substrate; and a reaction vessel disposed directly or indirectly on a surface of the second substrate. The reaction vessel includes a tubular structure, an inlet channel and an outlet channel. The tubular structure has a ratio ha/hc of 5 to 10, where ha is a diameter of a circle inscribed in an inner bottom surface of the tubular structure, and hc is an inner height of the tubular structure.

Ultraviolet irradiation apparatus

The present invention provides a method of manufacturing a blue silicate phosphor having high luminance and a chromaticity y comparable to or lower than that of BAM:Eu. The present invention is a method of manufacturing a blue silicate phosphor represented by the general formula aAO.bEuO.(Mg,Zn)O.cSiO.dCaCl, where A is at least one selected from Sr, Ba and Ca, and 2.970&#x2266;a&#x2266;3.500, 0.006&#x2266;b&#x2266;0.030, 1.900&#x2266;c&#x2266;2.100, 0&#x2266;d&#x2266;0.05, and 0&#x2266;w&#x2266;1 are satisfied. In this manufacturing method, heat treatment is carried out in a gas atmosphere having an oxygen partial pressure of 1&#xd7;10atm to 1&#xd7;10atm at a temperature of 1200&#xb0; C. to 1400&#xb0; C.

Method of manufacturing blue silicate phosphor, and blue silicate phosphor and light-emitting device

The present invention is a blue phosphor that is represented by a general formula xSrO.yEuO.MgO.zSiO, where 2.970&#x2266;x&#x2266;3.500, 0.006&#x2266;y&#x2266;0.030, and 1.900&#x2266;z&#x2266;2.100. This blue phosphor has a crystal structure that is essentially a merwinite structure, and the crystal structure has a unit cell volume of 714.8 &#x212b;or less. Or, in this blue phosphor, a peak appearing around 2&#x3b8;=22.86 degrees in an X-ray diffraction pattern obtained by measurement of the blue phosphor using an X-ray with a wavelength of 0.773 &#x212b; has a one-fifth value width of 0.17 degrees or less. Furthermore, the present invention is a light-emitting device having a phosphor layer including the phosphor. A suitable example of the light-emitting device is a plasma display panel.

The present invention aims at realizing a PDP and a mercury-free fluorescent lamp feasible to maintain excellent luminescent characteristics over long periods by suppressing time-lapse changes in luminescent characteristics of a phosphor that is excited by vacuum ultraviolet light to thereby emit light. To accomplish this object, the oxide phosphor of the invention comprises individual particles, each of which has a region at and near the surface thereof modified, and the elemental composition of the surface region is in a more oxidized state than that of the internal region of the particles. Alternatively, the surface region has more halogen or chalcogen in the elemental composition. In the phosphor treatment method of the invention, the surface region of individual phosphor particles is selectively modified by (i) forming a highly reactive gas atmosphere by exciting gas which contains reactive gas, and (ii) exposing the phosphor to the gas atmosphere.

Phosphor and treatment method for the same

A plasma display device is provided in which deterioration in brightness of phosphor layers can be avoided. The plasma display device includes a plasma display panel in which a plurality of discharge cells in one color or in a plurality of colors are arranged and phosphor layers are arranged so as to correspond to the discharge cells in colors and in which light is emitted by exciting the phosphor layers with ultraviolet rays. The phosphor layers include blue phosphor, the blue phosphor being composed of an alkaline-earth metal aluminate phosphor containing at least one element selected from the group consisting of Mo and W. The addition of hexavalent ions (Mo, W) in the blue phosphor allows the elimination of oxygen defects in the vicinity of a layer containing Ba atoms (Ba&#x2014;O layer), the suppression of adsorption of water to the surface of the blue phosphor and the improvement of deterioration in brightness and a change in chromaticity for the respective phosphors and discharge characteristics.

Plasma display device having blue phosphor layers with alkaline earth metal aluminate containing molybdenum or tungsten

Phosphor and a plasma display device are provided whose deterioration in brightness of phosphors and a degree of change in chromaticity are alleviated and whose discharge characteristics are improved and that has excellent initial characteristics. Phosphor of the present invention is an alkaline-earth metal aluminate phosphor containing an element M (where M denotes at least one type of element selected from the group consisting of Nb, Ta, W and B). In this phosphor, a concentration of M in the vicinity of a surface of the phosphor particles is higher than the average concentration of M in the phosphor particles as a whole. A plasma display device according to the present invention includes a plasma display panel in which a plurality of discharge cells in one color or in a plurality of colors are arranged and phosphor layers are arranged so as to correspond to the discharge cells in colors and in which light is emitted by exciting the phosphor layers with ultraviolet rays. The phosphor layers include blue phosphor, where the afore-mentioned phosphor is used as the blue phosphor.

Phosphor and plasma display device

Phosphors having high luminescence characteristics are provided while achieving manufacturing cost reductions by minimizing the usage amount of Eu, the luminescence center. Also provided are a display device (PDP, etc) and a fluorescent lamp having excellent display and/or luminescence characteristics as a result of using the phosphors, while achieving manufacturing cost reductions by minimizing the Eu usage amount.
