A light-emitting device includes: a first layer; a second layer; a light-emitting element layer positioned between the first layer and the second layer and including a light-emitting element; a first adhesive layer positioned between the first layer and the light-emitting element layer, and having a thickness of 10 μm or greater and less than 25 μm and a shear modulus at 23 degrees Celsius of 4.0E+04 Pa or greater and less than 1.0E+05 Pa; and a second adhesive layer positioned between the light-emitting element layer and the second layer, and having a thickness of greater than 0 μm and no greater than 15 μm and a shear modulus at 23 degrees Celsius of 1.0E+05 Pa or greater.

Light-emitting device and display device having first and second adhesive layers of different shear modulus

A liquid crystal (LC) device includes an optical stack arrangement including from the viewing side: a first electrode component; a first LC alignment layer; an LC layer; a second LC alignment layer; and a second electrode component. A voltage is applied to the LC device to create a potential difference between the first and second electrode components to switch an alignment of liquid crystals of selected portions of the LC layer from a first state when no voltage is applied to a second state when the voltage is applied. The first and second LC alignment layers are vertical alignment layers that induce a vertical alignment of the liquid crystals such that the first state when no voltage is applied is a vertical alignment state, and the liquid LC crystals switch to a planar alignment state as the second state when the voltage is applied. The first and/or second electrode components is a dual layer segmented electrode component comprising a first layer of electrode elements separated by inter-electrode gaps and a second layer of electrode elements separated by inter-electrode gaps, the first layer of electrode elements and the second layer of electrode elements being spaced apart in a viewing direction by an insulator layer.

Liquid crystal parallax barrier and method of addressing

A switchable view angle control device for a privacy view display system includes an electrically switchable view angle control LCD that is operable in a first state and a second state; a front polarizer located on a viewing side of the switchable view angle control LCD; and a polarized light source located on a non-viewing side of the switchable view angle control LCD that emits polarized light. When the switchable view angle control LCD in the first state, the view angle control device operates in a narrow angle view mode in which off-axis polarized light from the polarized light source is changed by the switchable view angle control LCD so that the off-axis light is absorbed by the front polarizer, and on-axis light passes through the switchable view angle control LCD and the front polarizer. When the switchable view angle control LCD is in the second state, the view angle control device operates in a wide angle view mode in which the polarized light from the polarized light source is scattered by the switchable view angle control LCD and passes through the front polarizer.

Provided is a display device capable of high-quality three-dimensional displaying. During three-dimensional displaying for a viewing position &#x3b2;, in a first term, an entirety of a first predetermined region of a second liquid crystal panel takes on a light-blocking state and a first adjacent region, which is adjacent to the first predetermined region in the first direction, takes on a light-transmitting state. In a second term, at least one of two side regions in the first predetermined region takes on the light-transmitting state, a remaining region of the first predetermined region takes on the light-blocking state, and at least part of the first adjacent region takes on the light-transmitting state.

Display device and liquid crystal panel driving method

The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device capable of performing high-definition and high-luminance dual view display. A liquid crystal display device of the present invention, includes: a first substrate; a second substrate disposed facing the first substrate; a liquid crystal layer disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate; a barrier layer formed on a surface side of the first substrate; a TFT element layer formed on the barrier layer; a pixel electrode laminated on the TFT element layer; a color filter disposed on a liquid crystal layer side of the second substrate; and a counter electrode disposed between the color filter and the liquid crystal layer. The barrier layer includes a barrier pattern formed on the first substrate and an intermediate layer with which the barrier pattern is covered.

Liquid crystal display device

A reconfigurable parallax barrier panel comprising an electro-optic material has a first region, a second region and a first compensation region. First electrodes are addressable to define, in the first region of the panel, a parallax barrier array selected from a plurality of predetermined parallax barrier arrays, and second electrodes are addressable define, in the second region of the panel, independently of the first parallax barrier array, a parallax barrier array selected from the plurality of predetermined parallax barrier arrays. Electrodes of the first compensation region are addressable to define, dependent on the first parallax barrier array and on the second parallax barrier array, at least one slit and/or at least one barrier between the first region and the second region. Where the first electrodes are addressed to define a first one of the predetermined parallax barrier arrays in the first region and the second electrodes are addressed to define a second, different one of the predetermined parallax barrier arrays in the second region, the electrodes of the first compensation region may define the at least one slit and/or at least one barrier to at least partially obscure any line artefact at the transition between the first one of the predetermined parallax barrier arrays and the second one of the predetermined parallax barrier arrays.

Parallax barrier with independently controllable regions

A reconfigurable parallax barrier panel comprising an electro-optic material has first and second regions. The parallax barrier panel is configured in a first mode to address the first and second electrodes on the basis of at least one received drive signal such that: the first electrodes define, in the first region of the panel, a first parallax barrier array selected from a plurality of predetermined parallax barrier arrays; and the second electrodes define, in the second region of the panel, independently of the first parallax barrier array, a second parallax barrier array selected from the plurality of predetermined parallax barrier arrays, the second parallax barrier array being different to the first parallax barrier array. To obtain a good autostereoscopic 3-D viewing zone the pitch of a parallax barrier would ideally vary over the width of the parallax barrier panel as a function of viewing distance. This is impracticable to obtain in a practical parallax barrier panel, but the present invention can provide a change in barrier pitch at the boundary between the first region and the second region, and this effectively mimics a pitch that varies over the width of the parallax barrier panel as a function of viewing distance. A parallax barrier panel of the invention can provide improved 3-D viewing when the parallax barrier panel is incorporated in a display.

A reconfigurable parallax barrier panel, for use in a display system with a 3D mode, includes a first substrate, a second substrate, and an electro-optic material positioned between the first and second substrates. The first and second substrates each respectively has a plurality of first and second electrodes, the electrodes being independently addressable from one another and comprising a plurality of electrode portions extending along a first direction and laterally spaced from one another along a second direction different from the first direction. The electrode portions of the first electrodes are arranged in a cyclic arrangement having a first pitch, and the electrode portions of the second electrodes are arranged in a cyclic arrangement having a second pitch that is different to the first pitch. The first and second electrodes are driven to generate different reconfigurable parallax barrier arrays corresponding to different viewing distances in a 3D mode of operation.

Dual-pitch parallax barrier

Obtained is a configuration of a stereoscopic display device wherein luminance variation and increase of crosstalk can be reduced over a period before and after the switching of the parallax barrier. The stereoscopic display device includes: a display panel for displaying an image with a plurality of pixels; a switch liquid crystal panel that is arranged so as to be stacked on the display panel; a position sensor for acquiring position information of a viewer; and a control unit for moving a parallax barrier in which transmitting regions and non-transmitting regions are formed in periodic fashion in a predetermined alignment direction, in such a manner that the parallax barrier is moved in the predetermined alignment direction in accordance with the position information, with use of a predetermined barrier switching pitch as a minimum unit, and causing the switch liquid crystal panel to display the parallax barrier. The plurality of pixels have openings each of which has a width A in the alignment direction, the width A satisfying the expressions of A&#x2264;Wsl&#x2212;2Pe, and A&#x2264;Wbr&#x2212;2Pe where Wsl is a width of the transmitting region, Wbr is a width of the non-transmitting region BR, and Pe is the barrier switching pitch.

Stereoscopic display device

A stereoscopic display device () of the present invention includes a display panel (), a switch liquid crystal panel (), a first polarizing plate () and a second polarizing plate (), and a control unit for moving a parallax barrier in which transmitting regions and non-transmitting regions are formed in periodic fashion in a predetermined alignment direction, in such a manner that the parallax barrier is moved in the predetermined alignment direction in accordance with position information, and causing the switch liquid crystal panel () to display the parallax barrier. A first alignment film () and a second alignment film () of the switch liquid crystal panel () are rubbed so that molecule long axes of liquid crystal molecules in the vicinities of the center of a liquid crystal layer () in the thickness direction in a state where no voltage is applied are oriented in a direction perpendicular to the alignment direction as viewed in a plan view. Retardation of the liquid crystal layer () is in a range of 380 nm to 466 nm both inclusive when an intersection angle that is an angle formed between a rubbing direction of the first alignment film () and a transmission axis of the first polarizing plate () is in a range of 0&#xb0; exclusive to 18&#xb0; inclusive, and is in a range of 410 nm to 450 nm both inclusive when the intersection angle is in a range of 18&#xb0; exclusive to 45&#xb0; inclusive.

A display device () includes a display panel (), a switch liquid crystal panel (), and a control unit (). The switch liquid crystal panel () includes a transparent electrode () provided in an active area (AA) on at least one of a first substrate () and a second substrate (), and a metal line () provided outside the active area (AA) on at least one of the first substrate () and the second substrate (), along four sides of the active area (AA).

Display device

Obtained is a configuration of a stereoscopic display device that allows a viewer to easily correct settings for stereoscopic display. A stereoscopic display device () includes: a display panel () for displaying an image; a switch liquid crystal panel () that is arranged so as to be stacked on the display panel (); a position sensor for acquiring position information of a viewer; and a control unit for causing the switch liquid crystal panel () to display a parallax barrier in which transmitting regions and non-transmitting regions are formed in periodic fashion in a predetermined alignment direction. The control unit has, as operation modes, at least a tracking mode in which, according to the position information, the parallax barrier is moved in the alignment direction and is displayed on the switch liquid crystal panel (), and a calibration mode for calibration of a reference position of the position information. The control unit sets a width of the transmitting region of the parallax barrier in the tracking mode, and a width of the transmitting region of the parallax barrier in the calibration mode, so that the widths are different from each other.

A configuration of a stereoscopic display device that is capable of maintaining crosstalk at a low level even when a viewer moves is provided. A stereoscopic display device () includes: a display panel () for displaying an image; a switch liquid crystal panel () that is arranged so as to be stacked on the display panel (); a position sensor for acquiring position information of a viewer; and a control unit for moving a parallax barrier in which transmitting regions and non-transmitting regions are formed in periodic fashion in a predetermined alignment direction, in such a manner that the parallax barrier is moved in the predetermined alignment direction in accordance with the position information, and causing the switch liquid crystal panel () to display the parallax barrier. The switch liquid crystal panel () includes: a liquid crystal layer () in which refractive index anisotropy &#x394;n of liquid crystal molecules is 0.14 or less; a first substrate () and a second substrate () that face each other with the liquid crystal layer () being interposed therebetween; and an electrode group including a plurality of electrodes that are formed on at least one of the first substrate () and the second substrate () and are arranged in the alignment direction.

Provide is a stereoscopic display device that is capable of, while preventing the crosstalk ratio from deteriorating, increasing the brightness during 3D display, switching 2D display and 3D display without decreases in the resolution, and achieving a switching response speed at the same level as that in the parallax barrier method. A switching liquid crystal panel () includes: a pair of substrates (); a liquid crystal layer () sealed between the substrates in pair (); a common electrode () formed over an entirety of an area where a parallax barrier () is realized on the substrate (); and a plurality of drive electrodes () formed on the substrate (), the drive electrodes (), in collaboration with the common electrode (), forming light-shielding parts () when a voltage is applied thereto, wherein the transmission parts () has an opening width that is equal to or greater than an opening width of the pixels () in a direction in which the transmission parts () and the light-shielding parts () are arrayed alternately.

A stereoscopic display device is provided where the luminance variation encountered when the parallax barrier is switched is reduced for viewing from a wide region. The stereoscopic display device includes: a display panel that displays an image; a switch liquid crystal panel disposed to overlie the display panel and including a liquid crystal layer; a position sensor that obtains positional information about a viewer; and a control unit that receives the positional information from the position sensor and locally applies to the liquid crystal layer a first voltage for rendering the switch liquid crystal panel translucent and a second voltage for rendering the switch liquid crystal panel non-translucent to display a parallax barrier that depends on the positional information. The control unit includes a timing adjustment unit that delays a time point for switching from the lower one of the first voltage and the second voltage to the higher one relative to a time point for switching from the higher one to the lower one by a delay time that depends on the positional information.
