A plurality of signal electrodes D arranged in parallel to each other are formed on a major surface of a first substrate 4. A second substrate 7 is disposed face to face to the first substrate. A plurality of plasma electrodes 9 arranged in parallel to each other and intersecting the signal electrodes D are formed on an inner surface of the second substrate 7. The plasma electrodes 9 are covered with an insulating film 10 for improvement of corrosion resistance. Instead of the insulating film, it is also preferable to form the plasma electrodes 9 themselves by a chemically inactive metallic film. An electro-optical material (e.g.liquid crystal) layer 6 is sandwiched between the first substrate 4 and the second substrate 7. A plasma chamber 11 is formed between the liquid crystal layer 6 and the second substrate 7, and filled with an ionizable gas. The gas is selectively ionized by the discharge between the two adjacent plasma electrodes 9. The liquid crystal layer 6 is driven with the discharge regions 12 at which the ionized gas is localized as the scanning unit. Further, an aperture communicating with the open air is formed in the plasma chamber 11 for improvement of pressure resistance. Since the corrosion resistance of the plasma electrodes can be increased, the plasma cell structure can be simplified and further the pressure resistance can be improved.

Plasma addressing electro-optical device

A jumbo-size picture display device arranged such that a number of red, green and blue fluorescent trios are formed in an X-Y matrix form. A shading material for controlling the color temperature is formed above predetermined red, green and blue fluorescent segments, whereby the color temperature can be corrected in a simple manner. The quality of the jumbo-size picture display device is improved and the manufacturing costs are reduced.

A cathode ray tube comprises an envelope, an electron beam source positioned at one end of the envelope, a target positioned at another end of the envelope, a first electrode supplied with low potential, and a second electrode supplied with high potential, the first and second electrodes being positioned between the electron beam source and the target, where extensions from the first electrode and extensions from the second electrode are combined with each other in zigzag form and intermediate potential is formed at intermediate position between the first electrode and the second electrode.

A cathode ray tube comprises an envelope; an electron beam source positioned at one end of the envelope; a target positioned at another end of the envelope opposite to the electron beam source; a mesh electrode positioned opposite to the target; and an electrostatic lens means positioned between the electron beam source and the mesh electrode, the lens means having a first electrode, a second electrode and a third electrode respectively positioned along the electron beam path to focus the electron beam, the second electrode being divided into four arrow or zig-zag patterns to deflect the electron beam.

An improved vertical and horizontal deflection electrode system for an electrostatic deflection cathode ray tube which comprises a glass bulb and an electron beam source and vertical and horizontal deflection electrodes formed in patterns and which are applied to the inner surface of the glass bulb and wherein the ratio of the area of the vertical deflection electrodes to the area of the horizontal deflection electrodes is selected to be approximately equal to the deflection aspect ratio of the electron beam and the horizontal and vertical directions which results in the voltage required in the deflection system being substantially decreased.

A cathode ray tube comprises an envelope, an electron beam source positioned at one end of the envelope, a target positioned at another end of the envelope, a mesh electrode positioned opposite to the target, and an electrostatic lens means positioned between the electron beam source and the mesh electrode. The lens means has a high-tension electrode and a low-tension electrode positioned along the electron beam path to focus the electron beam. The low-tension electrode is divided into four arrow or zig-zag patterns to deflect the electron beam. The length l between the electron beam source and the mesh electrode and the length x of the high-tension electrode are selected to optimize the magnification, aberration and landing error of the electrostatic lens means.

Control circuit for use with an image pickup tube permits highlights of an image to be scanned appropriately by a scanning electron beam by increasing the beam current fed to the cathode of the image pickup tube and prevents unwanted oscillations typically found when such beam currents are increased. The control circuit first determines whether the output from the image pickup tube exceeds a predetermined level and produces a control signal to be added to the normal beam current and also uses this control signal to control a vertical deflection circuit to shift the scanning electron beam upwardly toward a region on the photoelectric transducer of the image pickup tube that has already been scanned, thereby providing negative feedback and preventing unacceptable oscillations in the output signal.

In an electron-optical system of the mixed field type in which magnetic and electric fields are respectively operative to project a focused image of an object of the system upon a target structure and to simultaneously scan such image across the target structure, beam landing errors are eliminated by dimensioning and locating the solenoid for generating the magnetic field and the electrostatic yoke for generating the electric field so that the landing errors due to non-uniformity of the electric field, for example, by reason of field-free regions at the opposite ends thereof, are substantially cancelled by landing errors due to non-uniformity of the magnetic field, for example, as constituted by flare field regions at the opposite ends of the magnetic field.

Elimination of landing errors in electron-optical system of mixed field

An electrode structure includes a pin that extends through a hole in a fragile substrate, such as a thin, glass plate, and makes contact with a conductive layer on one surface of the plate. The structure includes a first metallic adherent layer on that portion of the conductive layer and a second metal layer on the exposed surface of the first metal layer. The hole extends through the conductive layer and both of the metal layers. The first metal layer is adherent to the conductive layer and consists of iron, chromium, or nickel, for example, deposited on the conductive layer. The second metal layer is a fixative for the first layer and is wettable by soft solder. It consists of a noble metal from the group consisting of gold, silver, platinum and paladium. The pin has a head larger than the cross-section of the hole and a surface that is wettable by soft solder. A ring of soft solder encircles the pin and is solidified into joining relationship between the surface of the pin and the adjacent surrounding surface of the second metal layer to form a hermetic seal and an electrical connection between the pin and the second metal layer. The solder ring may be placed on the pin as a separate element, and its temperature may be raised to the molten state by heat treatment of the entire assembly, after which the solder resolidifies upon cooling.
