An internal latent image-type direct positive silver halide photographic emulsion is disclosed, comprising a silver halide grain prepared to have a composite structure such that the iodide content of the silver halide in the silver halide phase formed on the surface of a silver halide grain is higher than the iodide content of the silver halide in the phase on the inner side, wherein the average iodide content of all grains is less than 1.0 mol % and the amount of iodide supplied for the silver halide phase formed on the surface of the grain is from 0.005 mol % to less than 0.3 mol % based on all grains. Also disclosed is a color diffusion transfer light-sensitive material using the emulsion.

An emulsion contains tabular silver halide having a thickness of less than 0.5 .mu.m, a diameter of 0.3 .mu.m or more, and a grain diameter/thickness ratio of 2 or more. The tabular silver halide grains account for at least 50% of a total projected area of all silver halide grains. 50% (number) or more of the tabular silver halide grains include 10 or more dislocations per grain. A relative standard elevation of silver iodide content of individual tabular silver halide 30% or less. This light-sensitive silver halide emulsion has a high sensitivity and a high gamma improved in photographic properties and in rate of development. Each tabular silver halide grain may internally have a portion where a silver iodide content is higher than that of the surface of the grain. When the light-sensitive silver halide emulsion is added to a silver halide emulsion layer, a photographic light-sensitive material having a high sensitivity and a high gamma and improved in photographic properties and in rate of development can be obtained.

A silver halide photographic emulsion contains tabular silver halide grains having an aspect ratio of 2 or more in an amount of 70% or more of a total projected area of all grains. A variation coefficient of the grain size distribution of all silver halide grains is 20% or less, a signal having at least two peaks is present in a diffraction angle range of less than 1.5 degree at a maximum peak height.times.0.13 of a (420) X-ray diffraction signal obtained using the K.sub..alpha. line of Cu, and a peak interval thereof is 0.1 degree or more in terms of the diffraction angle.

A silver halide photographic material comprising at least one silver halide emulsion layer on a support, wherein the latent image distribution of silver halide grains contained in the at least one emulsion layer has at least one peak value within the grains, the location of the peak value is at a depth of less than 0.01 .mu.m from the surface of the grains, and the average silver iodide content of the grains is about 15 mol % or less.
