A bright pigment of the present invention is a bright pigment including flaky particles and a metal oxide layer covering each surface of the flaky particles. The metal oxide layer has a thickness variation coefficient (standard deviation of thickness of the metal oxide layer/average thickness of the metal oxide layer) of 20% or less. The bright pigment preferably contains a sodium component, and the sodium component is NaO. The content of NaO in the flaky particles is 3% by mass or more and less than 9.5% by mass. The bright pigment preferably has a specific surface area of 5.0 m/g or less.

A bright pigment of the present invention is a bright pigment including flaky particles and a metal oxide layer covering each surface of the flaky particles. The bright pigment has a particle diameter corresponding to a 90% volume-cumulative particle diameter from a small particle diameter side, in a particle size distribution, of 55 &#x3bc;m or less. The flaky particles are formed of a material having a refractive index of 1.4 to 1.8. The flaky particles have an average thickness of 0.35 to 0.55 &#x3bc;m and substantially do not contain flaky particles having a thickness of 0.15 &#x3bc;m or less.

The bright pigment of the present invention contains a scaly substrateand an outermost coatingthat covers the scaly substrate, that is provided as an outermost layer, and that contains at least one member selected from the group consisting of hydroxyapatite and hydrocalumite. The bright pigment of the present invention may be further provided with an interference color coating that is disposed more towards the center than the outermost coating and that contains at least one metal oxide selected from the group consisting of titanium oxide and iron oxide. The bright pigment of the present invention includes flaky particles and a metal oxide layer coating at least a part of the surface of each flaky particle. The bright pigment or the flaky particles of the present invention have a particle size distribution in which the particle size at 99% of the cumulative volume from the smaller particle size is 48 &#x3bc;m or less, and the maximum particle size is 62 &#x3bc;m or less. The flaky particles are made of a material having a refractive index in the range of 1.4 to 1.8. The flaky particles have a thickness distribution in which the frequency of the particles having a thickness in the range of 0.8 &#x3bc;m to 1.9 &#x3bc;m is 90% or more by volume, or the frequency of the particles having a thickness in the range of 0.01 &#x3bc;m to 0.35 &#x3bc;m is 90% or more by volume.
