A synthetic resin composition having particles of metallic gallium or gallium alloy dispersed uniformly in a synthetic resin is particularly useful for the production of a surfacing material for a glider for use on snow or ice. When a molten paraffin wax is applied to such surfacing material, part of the wax penetrates into the resultant sheet to form a gallium-paraffin mixture on the surface of the gallium particles and at lower snow or ice temperatures, the gallium particles expand, and as a result of their expansion, the gallium particles are held strongly enough on the gliding surface of, for example, a ski to maintain good water-repelling and glide characteristic over a prolonged period without the gallium-paraffin mixture becoming detached from the ski. The composition is also useful for many other similar uses such as a plastic gear, a constructional material, a marine structural material and the like, because of its excellent glide, water-repelling and wear resisting properties, which can be retained for a prolonged period.

Fine particles of gallium or gallium alloy that are covered with a coating agent on the surface can be dispersed in a solvent such as an engine oil, n-hexane, etc., to make a variety of useful liquid suspensions which include a modified automotive engine oil, which is superior to a commercial engine oil; a liquid ski wax which is portable in a cylindrical container; and the like.

The invention provides a novel magnetically traceable or detectable explosive blended with a magnetic ferrite powder which facilitates the detection of the misfired explosive, e.g. dynamite, remaining in the field after blasting by a magnetic means but not to adversely affect the stability of the explosive. The ferrite powder is freed of any free alkalinity on the surface before blending with the explosive either by washing with water, neutralization with a dilute acid, reaction with an acid followed by washing with water or neutralization with an alkali and/or by coating with a polymeric material on the particles. The most efficient method for the coating of the ferrite powder with a polymeric material is the in situ polymerization of a radical-polymerizable monomer in contact with the ferrite particles in the presence of hydrogensulfite ions and the explosives blended with such a polymer-coated ferrite powder retain their stability even after a prolonged storage.
