This invention concerns a large-diameter optical fiber that is improved in the bandwidth and bending loss and that can be produced at low cost with higher productivity. The optical fiber comprises an inner core having a refractive index profile in which refractive indices increase toward the center axis thereof, an outer core provided outside the inner core and having a constant refractive index not more than the minimum refractive index of the inner core, and a cladding provided outside the outer core and containing a plastic material having a refractive index lower than that of the outer core. In the optical fiber, total refractive index difference (.DELTA.n.sub.total), defined as the difference between the maximum refractive index of the inner core and the refractive index of the cladding, is not less than 0.015 and not more than 0.1; and a outside core diameter of the outer core (d.sub.1) is not less than 100 .mu.m and not more than 500 .mu.m.

A membrane for the separation of carbon dioxide is disclosed which includes a hydrogel film of a cross-linked, vinyl alcohol/acrylic acid salt copolymer impregnated with an aqueous carrier solution containing a carbon dioxide carrier dissolved therein. A composition containing a solvent, an alkali metal carbonate or bicarbonates, and a polydentate ligand capable of forming a complex with an alkali metal ion is suitably used as the carrier solution. This composition may also be used for the preparation of a liquid film of a carbon dioxide separation membrane.

An organic thin film and process for making the same, having electroconductivity, semiconductivity or superconductivity. The film is made of vapor-deposited bisethylenedithiatetrathiafulvalene (BEDT-TTF) by heating BEDT-TTF at a pressure of 10.sup.-2 Torr or below and at a temperature not higher than 260.degree. C. The temperature of the substrate on which the vapor is deposited is held at a lower temperature than the vapor. A thin film produced under these temperature and pressure conditions contains substantially no decomposition product. The electroconductivity of the film can be adjusted by selecting the substrate used for vapor-deposition of the film and the electron acceptor used as a dopant of the film. In order to achieve a vapor-deposited film with a high degree of orientation, silicon wafer is preferably used as a substrate for the film.

An optical fiber which comprises a core made of a glass material, a thin plastic cladding formed on the peripheral surface of the core and a plastic coating formed on the plastic cladding, and satisfies the conditions (1) a specific refractive index of cladding resin after curing being 0.970 to 0.985 times that of the core periphery at a practical wavelength at ambient temperature, (2) light transmission through the cladding resin after curing being 500 to 4000 dB/km at a practical wavelength, and (3) a coefficient of linear expansion of the cladding resin after curing being not larger than 2.0.times.10.sup.-4 /.degree.C., which optical fiber has a wide band-width and high NA.

A process for producing an organic electrical conductor comprising the steps of: (1) dissolving or dispersing an electron-donating material and an electron-accepting material in a solvent containing an alcohol; and (2) forming and growing crystals of the organic electrical conductor by subjecting the dissolved or dispersed materials of step (1) to electrochemical oxidation-reduction.
