In a scroll type compressor in which bottom plates (2, 3) are disposed on bottoms of involute grooves formed on scroll members (20, 30), respectively, each of the bottom plates has a thickness becoming gradually larger from an outer circumferential portion of each of the involute grooves towards a central portion thereof. The scroll members confront with each other in an axial direction with each of the bottom plates being interposed between the scroll members in the axial direction.

A scroll-type fluid displacement apparatus includes a first and a second scroll, each having an end plate and a spiral wrap extending from one side of the end plate. The spiral wraps interfit at an angular and radial offset to make a plurality of line contacts which define a pair of fluid pockets. A driving mechanism is operatively connected to the first scroll to orbit the first scroll relative to the second scroll while preventing rotation of the second scroll, to thereby change the volume of the pair of fluid pockets. Sealing elements are disposed in the axial ends of the spiral wraps for sealing a central portion of fluid pockets defined by the spiral wraps. Thus, the axial sealing of fluid pocket formed between the orbiting and fixed scroll is more secure in all process from the suction to the discharge stage. Further, the volumetric efficiency of the compressor increases.

A variable displacement mechanism for a scroll type compressor opens and closes a communication path between the suction chamber and a pair of intermediately located sealed spaces. The variable displacement mechanism includes a piston valve member slidably disposed within a cavity. The piston valve selectively opens and closes the communication path between the suction chamber and intermediately located sealed spaces. A conduit permanently links the discharge chamber to the upper end surface of the piston valve so that, even when the communication path is established, the upper end surface of the piston valve is constantly exposed to discharge pressure.
