A process for the production of a poly(arylene thioether) containing phthalic anhydride groups wherein a dihalogen-substituted aromatic compound is reacted with an alkali metal sulfide in a polar organic solvent containing water to produce the poly(arylene thioether) is disclosed. This process comprises causing a monohalogen-substituted phthalic compound to exist in a polymerization reaction system, and controlling a ratio, a/b of the number of moles, a of the charged dihalogen-substituted aromatic compound to the number of moles, b of the charged alkali metal sulfide within a range of 0.8&lt;a/b&lt;1.

A thermoplastic resin composition is prepared by blending 50-95 wt. % of a copolymer (A) of 10-75 wt. % of .alpha.-methyl styrene, 10-60 wt. % of methyl methacrylate, 5-35 wt. % of acrylonitrile and 0-20 wt. % of a monomer copolymerizable therewith; and 5-50 wt. % of a graft copolymer (B) comprising 50-85 wt. parts of a butadiene-based rubber polymer and 15-50 wt. parts of a vinyl monomer graft-polymerized onto the rubber polymer. The butadiene-based rubber polymer includes 50-98 wt. % of butadiene, 2-50 wt. % of an aromatic polycyclic vinyl monomer represented by a formula (I) below and 0-20 wt. % of a monomer copolymerizable therewith: ##STR1## wherein R denotes an optionally substituted biphenylyl or naphthyl group, and R.sub.1 denotes a hydrogen atom or a methyl group. The thermoplastic resin composition is provided with a good balance among heat-resistance, impact resistance, transparency and processability because the graft copolymer (B) using an aromatic polycyclic vinyl monomer shows a good impact resistance-modifying effect while retaining a relatively high refractive index and the copolymer (A) shows a good heat resistance and a relatively low refractive index.

The present invention discloses a process for producing a granular polyarylene sulfide which has a high melt viscosity and a high degree of cross-linkage, becomes gel under melting and is easy to handle in the production and the fabrication thereof. The process disclosed herein comprises (1) a step (A) an initial-stage polymerization step for obtaining a polyarylene sulfide by reacting an alkali metal sulfide, a dihaloaromatic compound and a polyhaloaromatic compound, having three or more halogen substituents in a molecule, in the presence of water in an amount of 0.5 to 2.9 moles per mol of said alkali metal sulfide at a temperature in the range of 180.degree. to 235.degree. C. until the total conversion ratio of said dihalo- and polyhaloaromatic compounds reaches 50 to 98% and the melt viscosity of a polyarylene sulfide obtained at the end of the step becomes 5 to 5,000 poise, measured at 310.degree. C. and a shear rate of 1,200/second; (2) a step (B) a temperature raising step in which while adjusting an amount of water to be 2.5 to 7 moles per mol of fed alkali metal sulfide, a temperature raising condition from the temperature of step (A) to 240.degree. C. is controlled so that the melt viscosity of a polymer obtained at 240.degree. C. reaches 300 to 10,000 poise, measured at 310.degree. C. and a shear rate of 1,200/second and the temperature raising rate between 240.degree. C. and a temperature of the following step (C) is further controlled to be within the range of 10.degree. to 100.degree. C./hour; and (3) a step (C) a second-stage polymerization step for further continuing the reaction at a temperature of 245.degree. to 290.degree. C. until a melt viscosity of the final product reaches not lower than 1.times.10.sup.5 poise, measured at 330.degree. C. and a shear rate of 2/second. The present invention also discloses a granular cross-linked polyarylene sulfide produced by the process described above.

Process for the preparation of cross-linked polyarylene sulfide

Disclosed herein is a process for the production of a granular poly(arylene thioether) copolymer by polymerizing an alkali metal sulfide with dihalo-aromatic compounds including at least one dihalo-aromatic carboxylic acid in a polar solvent containing water. Upon the polymerization, at least a part of the dihalo-aromatic carboxylic acid is converted into an alkaline earth metal salt in advance, the hydroxide and/or oxide of an alkaline earth metal is added together with the dihalo-aromatic carboxylic acid to the polymerization reaction system, or the hydroxide and/or oxide of an alkaline earth metal is added together with an alkaline earth metal salt of the dihalo-aromatic carboxylic acid and the dihalo-aromatic carboxylic acid to the polymerization reaction system.

Process for production of poly(arylene thioether) copolymer

The present invention discloses a process for producing a granular polyarylene sulfide which has a high melt viscosity and a high degree of cross-linkage, becomes gel under melting and is easy to handle in the production and the fabrication thereof. The process disclosed herein comprises (1) a step (A) an initial-stage polymerization step for obtaining a polyarylene sulfide by reacting an alkali metal sulfide, a dihaloaromatic compound and a polyhaloaromatic compound, having three or more halogen substituents in a molecule, in the presence of water in an amount of 0.5 to 2.9 moles per mol of said alkali metal sulfide at a temperature in the range of 180.degree. to 235.degree. C. until the total conversion ratio of said dihalo- and polyhaloaromatic compounds reaches 50 to 98% and the melt viscosity of a polyarylene sulfide obtained at the end of the step becomes 5 to 5,000 poise, measured at 310.degree. C. and a shear rate of 1,200/second; (2) a step (B) a temperature raising step in which while adjusting an amount of water to be 2.5 to 7 moles per mol of fed alkali metal sulfide, a temperature raising condition from the temperature of step (A) to 240.degree. C. is controlled so that the melt viscosity of a polymer obtained at 240.degree. C. reaches 300 to 10,000 poise, measured at 310.degree. C. and a shear rate of 1,200/second and the temperature raising rate between 240.degree. C. and a temperature of the following step (C) is further controlled to be within the range of 10.degree. to 100.degree. C./hour; and (3) a step (C) a second -stage polymerization step for further continuing the reaction at a temperature of 245.degree. to 290.degree. C. until a melt viscosity of the final product reaches not lower than 1.times.10.sup.5 poise, measured at 330.degree. C. and a shear rate of 2/second. The present invention also discloses a granular cross-linked polyarylene sulfide produced by the process described above.

Disclosed herein is a crystallized, thin-wall container which is excellent in heat-resistance, oil-resistance, chemical stability under high temperature and high humidity and gas impermeability, is particularly suitable for heating foodstuffs packaged in it in electronic range, electric oven, etc. and is obtained by thermoforming a substantially amorphous sheet which has a crystallinity index of below 15% and an elongation of not less than 100% at room temperature and is obtained from a poly(arylene sulfide) which has a substantially linear structure, has not less thant 70 wt % of a repeating unit of ##STR1## and a logarithmic viscosity number of 0.2 to 1.0 in a solution of 1-chloronaphthalene (concentration of 0.4 g/dl at a temperature of 208.degree. C.) and a process for producing the container.

Thermoformed polyarylene sulfide container

Disclosed herein is a process for the production of a polyarylenesulfide, wherein an alkali metal sulfide is reacted with a dihalo-aromatic compound in an organic amide solvent. The process comprises causing at least one compound selected from the oxides and hydroxides of alkaline earth metals to exist in a proportion not less than 0.01 mole but less than 0.1 mole per mole of the alkali metal sulfide charged in the reaction system, and performing the reaction of the alkali metal sulfide and dihalo-aromatic compound while raising the temperature by at least two stages in the presence of water in an amount defined in a specific range. A high-molecular weight linear polyarylenesulfide can be provided without use of a crosslinking agent or a polymerization aid.

Disclosed herein are a poly(arylene thioether) block copolymer alternately comprising (A) at least one poly(arylene thioether-ketone) block having predominant recurring units of the formula ##STR1## wherein the --CO-- and --S-- are in the para position to each other and (B) at least one poly(arylene thioether) block having predominant recurring units of the formula ##STR2## (a) the ratio of the total amount of the poly(arylene thioether) block (B) to the total amount of the poly(arylene thioether-ketone) block (A) being within a range of 0.05-5 by weight, (b) the average polymerization degree of the poly(arylene thioether) block (B) being at least 10, and (c) said block copolymer having a melt viscosity of 2-100,000 poises as measured at 350.degree. C. and a shear rate of 1,200/sec as well as a production process the poly(arylene thioether) block copolymer. The invention also provides a stabilized poly(arylene thioether) block copolymer containing a basic compound either alone or in combination with an antioxidant.

Disclosed herein are a polymer alloy prepared by polymerizing 0.1 to 100 parts by weight of at least one radically polymerizable monomer to 100 parts by weight of polyarylene thioether having a repeating unit of ##STR1## as a main constituent and at least a part of said radically polymerizable monomers is polymerized within inner pores of the polyarylene thioether particles and a process for producing the polymer alloy. The polymer alloy of polyarylene thioether according to the present invention has the fine particles of the radically polymerized monomer uniformly dispersed in the said polymer alloy, and accordingly, the polymer alloy of polyarylene thioether according to the present invention is excellent in various physical properties, such as, good impact strength and improved anti-flash property.

Disclosed herein are a poly(arylene thioether) block copolymer alternately comprising (A) at least one poly(arylene thioether-ketone) block having predominant recurring units of the formula ##STR1## wherein the --CO-- and --S-- are in the para position to each other and (B) at least one poly(arylene thioether) block having predominant recurring units of the formula ##STR2## (a) the ratio of the total amount of the poly(arylene thioether) block (B) to the total amount of the poly(arylene thioether-ketone) block (A) being within a range of 0.05-5 by weight, (b) the average polymerization degree of the poly(arylene thioether) block (B) being at least 10, and (c) said block copolymer having a melt viscosity of 2-00,000 poises as measured at 350.degree. C. and a shear rate of 1,200/sec as well as a production process the poly(arylene thioether) block copolymer. The invention also provides a stabilized poly(arylene thioether) block copolymer containing a basic compound either alone or in combination with an antioxidant.

Disclosed herein is a melt-stable poly(arylene thioether-ketone) prepreg, which comprises in integral combination (A) 20-90 wt. % of a fibrous reinforcing material which comprises long fibers and/or at least one shaped long fiber body, said fibers and/or body being formed of inorganic fibers and/or organic fibers; and (B) 10-80 wt. % of a a thermoplastic matrix material composed principally of a melt-stable poly(arylene thioether-ketone) having predominant recurring units of the formula ##STR1## and having a melting point, Tm of 310.degree.-380.degree. C., a residual melt crystallization enthalpy, .DELTA.Hmc (420.degree. C/10 min) of at least 10 J/g, a melt crystallization temperature, Tmc (420.degree.C./10 min) of at least 210.degree. C. and a reduced viscosity of 0.2-2 dl/g. A melt-stable molded or formed product can also be obtained by shaping the above prepreg or an arrangement or laminate of prepregs of the same type as the above prepreg at 140.degree.-450.degree. C. under stresses.
