In an optical element which includes a single crystal having at least one flat light-transmitting end surface, the at least one light-transmitting end surface is inclined at at least 0.5 degrees relative to a plane perpendicular to one of an a-axis and a c-axis of the single crystal. In a process of producing such an optical element, a single crystal is cut out so that the single crystal has at least one surface which is inclined at at least 0.5 degrees relative to a plane perpendicular to one of an a-axis and a c-axis of the single crystal, and then the at least one surface is polished into at least one light-transmitting end surface.

In a laser-diode-pumped laser apparatus, a solid-state laser crystal doped with at least one rare-earth element including at least Pr is pumped with a laser diode, and emits laser light. In the first aspect, the laser diode has an active layer made of one of an InGaN, InGaNAs, and GaNAs materials, and an optical wavelength conversion element converts the solid-state laser light into ultraviolet laser light by wavelength conversion. In the second aspect, the solid-state laser crystal is codoped with Pr and at least one of Er , Ho , Dy , Eu , Sm , Pm , and Nd . In the third aspect, instead of the solid-state laser crystal, an optical fiber codoped with Pr and at least one of Er , Ho , Dy , Eu , Sm , Pm , and Nd is pumped with a GaN-based compound laser diode. In the fourth aspect, an optical fiber codoped with Pr and at least one of Er , Ho , Dy , Eu , Sm , Pm , and Nd amplifies incident light having a wavelength which is identical with a wavelength of fluorescence generated by pumping of the optical fiber with a GaN-based compound laser diode.

An optical wavelength converter system includes a light source for emitting a fundamental wave, a fiber or optical waveguide type optical wavelength converter device for converting the wavelength of the fundamental wave and emitting a wavelength-converted wave, and an optical system for introducing said fundamental wave into the optical wavelength converter device. The optical wavelength converter device includes an element made of an organic nonlinear optical material and covered with a cladding layer which has a smaller refractive index than the refractive index of said element. The optical wavelength converter device is housed in a closed container which is filled with an inert medium such as perfluorocarbon oil to keep the element out of contact with an atmosphere such as air.

Optical wavelength converter system

A bulk crystal type optical wavelength converter device is made of a monocrystalline nonlinear optical material (3,5-dimethyl-1-(4-nitrophenyl)pyrazole, referred to as PRA). A linearly polarized fundamental having a wavelength ranging from 900 to 4000 nm is applied to the bulk monocrystalline nonlinear optical material to achieve angular phase matching of the type I for obtaining a second harmonic of the fundamental. An optical wavelength converter module comprises a fiber type optical wavelength converter device and a light source device. The optical wavelength converter device includes a core made of a monocrystal of the PRA which has a crystal orientation such that the c-axis thereof extends substantially along the axis of the core. The light source device applies, to the optical wavelength converter device, a fundamental which is linearly polarized in the direction of the a-axis or b-axis of the crystal which is normal to the c-axis.

Optical wavelength conversion method and optical wavelength converter

An optical wavelength converter module comprises a fiber type optical wavelength converter device and a light source device. The optical wavelength converter device includes a core made of a monocrystalline nonlinear optical material (3,5-dimethyl-1-(4-nitrophenyl)-1,2,4-triazole). The optical material has a crystal oriented such that the b-axis thereof extends substantially along the axis of said core. The light source device applies, to the optical wavelength converter device, a fundamental which is linearly polarized in the direction of the a-axis or c-axis of said crystal which is normal to the b-axis.
