A projection optical system having a plurality of reflecting surfaces is disclosed in which a sufficiently large angle is provided between an incident side reference axis and an emerging side reference axis while tilt angles of the respective reflecting surfaces can remain small. A projection optical system which can project a bright image with less distortion and a small projection distance without causing aberration or an increase in size of reflective surfaces is disclosed. The projection optical system projects luminous flux from an original image onto a projection surface which is oblique to a central principal ray which is a principal ray of luminous flux traveling from the center of the original image to the center of a projected image. A display panel, such as a liquid crystal panel, fixed onto a holder plate is aligned with other optical members, and while the alignment is maintained, the holder plate is fixed onto a panel-fixing frame with solder. At least one of the holder plate and the panel-fixing frame at the fixing region is provided with an opening or a cut, whereby the scattering of the solder around the fixing region is prevented and an improved fixing strength is attained.

A liquid crystal display is disclosed having switching devices corresponding to pixel electrodes formed on the same semiconductor layer that has a drive circuit therein. The drive circuit is formed on the semiconductor layer in a single crystal semiconductor region and the switching devices are formed either in a second single crystal semiconductor region or in a non-single crystal semiconductor region. The second single crystal semiconductor region or the non-single crystal semiconductor region bearing the switching devices has a higher density of defects than the first semiconductor region.
