A power conversion system includes an inverter and a controller configured to: responsive to startup of the system, measure a motor speed of the IPM motor; responsive to the motor speed being less than a threshold, generate the inverter switching control signals to perform high frequency injection (HFI); during the HFI, determine a measured angle of the IPM motor; during the HFI, generate the inverter switching control signals to provide an injected current to the IPM motor; detect acceleration or deceleration of the IPM motor responsive to the injected current; selectively determine an electrical angle as half the measured angle or as 180 degrees plus half the measured angle based on the detected acceleration or deceleration of the IPM motor; and responsive to determining the electrical angle, generate the inverter switching control signals to drive the IPM motor to a reference frequency in a normal operating mode of the inverter.

IPM motor flying start using high frequency injection

For encoder offset fine tuning, a processor iteratively reduces an encoder offset error of the motor with a third offset step until the motor starts. The processor iteratively modifies the encoder offset of the motor turning in a positive direction with a first offset step until the motor stops. The processor further records the encoder offset as a first encoder offset. The processor iteratively modifies the encoder offset with the first offset step until the motor starts turning in a negative direction. The negative direction is opposite the positive direction. The processor iteratively modifies the encoder offset with a second offset step until the motor stops. The processor records the encoder offset as a second encoder offset. In addition, the processor calculates a final encoder offset as a function of the first encoder offset and the second encoder offset.

Motor drives, methods and estimation systems are presented for estimating a rotor position of a motor load in which four sets of inverter output current samples obtained at four different sample times in a given inverter PWM cycle are converted into a corresponding stationary reference frame current value pairs, and the rotor position estimate is computed according to the stationary reference frame current values.

Methods and apparatus are presented for sampling low side inverter phase currents, in which current sampling is selectively delayed in a given PWM cycle by a non-zero sampling delay time value from a nominal sample time if the middle pulse width value is less than a non-zero first threshold to facilitate adequate signal settling for accurate current measurement, and if a middle total continuous on-time near the end of the given PWM cycle is less than a non-zero second threshold, the middle total continuous on-time is selectively extended by adding a non-zero adjustment offset time value to a middle pulse width value for a next PWM cycle.

Inverter phase current reconstruction apparatus and methods

A method for determining the position of a rotor in a permanent magnet synchronous motor includes applying voltage pulses to the windings at successive electrical angles while the motor is at a standstill. The resultant current is sampled. The position of a maximum current is determined by identifying an segment of an electrical cycles which includes the maximum current, and using a spline interpolation to model the current flow in this segment. The maximum current is then correlated to the position of the rotor.

Method for determining a rotor position in a permanent magnet motor

Systems and methods of controlling a permanent magnet motor without a mechanical position sensor are provided. In accordance with one embodiment, a motor control system includes an inverter configured to receive direct current (DC) power and output a power waveform to a permanent magnet motor, driver circuitry configured to receive control signals and drive the inverter based upon the control signals, a current sensor configured to determine a sampled current value associated with the power waveform, and control circuitry configured to generate the control signals based at least in part upon a comparison of a flux-producing component of the sampled current value and a flux-producing component of a command reference current value.

Position sensorless control of permanent magnet motor

A motor drive unit includes a controller, a voltage inverter, and a speed estimator. The controller is operable to generate at least one command signal for controlling a motor associated with the motor drive unit. The voltage inverter is operable to generate motor drive signals to be applied to the motor based on the command signal. The speed estimator is operable to estimate a speed of the motor when the voltage inverter is not providing the motor drive signals. The speed estimator is further operable to receive two-axis voltage measurements associated with the motor, determine flux angles for the motor based on the two-axis voltage measurements, and estimate the speed based on the determined flux angles.

Method and apparatus for monitoring motor status using induced motor voltage

An electronic drive for vector control of an induction motor controls slip and operating frequency in response to changes in stator voltage. The drive includes a torque control loop, a flux control loop and a frequency control loop. The control is based on a commanded stator current that is resolved into a torque-producing, or q-axis, current component and a flux-producing, or d-axis, current component that are in quadrature. The frequency control loop includes slip control in which a slip frequency command is produces based on a value for the leakage inductance of the motor. The leakage inductance value dynamically varies as a function of the q-axis current reference command.
