A magnetic recording medium having a magnetic layer in the form of a ferromagnetic metal thin film includes an undercoat film disposed between the magnetic layer and the substrate and a topcoat film on the magnetic layer. Each of the undercoat and topcoat films is a plasma polymerized film containing silicon, the Si content in the film being 30 to 50 at %. Corrosion resistance and durability are significantly improved.

Magnetic recording medium

In an optical recording medium comprising a substrate and a recording layer thin film comprised of a rare earth element and a transition metal, for example, TbFeCo on the substrate, a metal thin film layer having a high magnetic permeability, for example, Permalloy is formed on the recording layer. A transparent dielectric film layer may be formed between the substrate and the recording layer thin film.

Optical magnetic recording medium

A magnetic recording medium having a subbing metal layer formed by sputtering under a thin magnetic layer formed by vapor deposition possesses excellent magnetic properties and high surface hardness. The presence of the subbing layer improves the adhesion of the thin magnetic layer to the support.
