Disclosed is a phosphor containing a nitrogen element, a compound having a garnet structure and an activator. The activator is composed of at least one element selected from the group consisting of Ce, Pr, Nd, Eu, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Mn.

An object of the present invention is to provide fluorescence showing a peak wavelength of excited spectrum within the wavelength range of from 350 to 500 nm and suitable for a white LED emitting yellow light, and a white LED comprising this fluorescence. The object of the present invention is to provide a process for producing particles of a metal compound having a spherical particle shape and an average particle diameter larger than 0.3 &#x3bc;m without employing high-pressure conditions. This object is achieved by a process for producing particle of a metal compound comprising a step of adjusting pH of an aqueous solution containing urea and at least one metal element to from 4 to 8, a step of heating the aqueous solution under normal pressure, a step of separating a solid from the solution, and a step of drying the solid.

The objective of the present invention is to provide a phosphor for use in a light emitting element excited by vacuum ultraviolet-ray that has high brightness even after plasma exposure. This object is achieved by a phosphor comprising a compound represented by a formula M M Mn O (wherein, M represents at least one of materials selected from the group consisting of La, Y and Gd, and M represents at least one of materials selected from the group consisting of A1 and Ga, a represents a number in a range from not less than 0 to less than 1, b represents a number in a range from not less than 0 to less than 1, and sum of a and b is greater than 0), and by a light emitting element excited by vacuum ultraviolet-ray comprising the above-mentioned phosphor.
