A rotor of a rotary electric machine has a pair of pole core members each of which has a core portion and a plurality of claw poles extending axially from outer periphery of the core portion. A plurality of magnet holders with permanent magnets are held therein and a connection member axially fixes the magnet holders to the pole core members. The connection member has a pair of end plates disposed at opposite ends of the rotor and a plurality of connecting rods extending axially to mechanically connect the magnet holders from opposite ends.

An alternator includes a housing having first and second axial end portions with a plurality of air intake ports for permitting air to pass through the axial end portions. The housing also includes first and second air exhaust ports which are spaced from one another. A stator assembly includes a stator core provided on an inner surface of the housing between the air exhaust ports and a stator winding wound around the stator core. A rotor assembly includes a rotor shaft, a rotor core fixed to the rotor shaft, and a rotor coil wound around the rotor core. The rotor shaft is rotatably supported by the axial end portions of the housing. A diode fin and a voltage regulator are disposed around an end of the rotor shaft. A pair of fans are mounted to the end surfaces of the pole cores of the rotor to increase the cooling efficiency of the alternator.

An improved construction of Randel-type rotor of a vehicle-mounted alternator, capable of reducing the windage noise which is produced as a result of interference between the rotor and the stator of the alternator. The rotor has a pair of pole cores provided with a plurality of mutually meshing claws, and an exciting coil disposed at the inner side of the pole cores. Spacers in the form of an integral ring or discrete wedges are fitted in the spaces between adjacent pole core claws so as to provide a substantially smooth cylindrical outer peripheral surface of the rotor portion facing the radial teeth on the stator.

A brush holding device for holding carbon brushes in sliding contact with slip rings of an alternator. The device has a brush holder formed by an insertion molding integrally with terminal plates. The brush holder has a pair of brush chambers for movably receiving the carbon brushes and a pair of pig tail chambers accommodating pig tails through which the carbon brushes are electrically connected to the terminal plates. The carbon brushes are resiliently biased into contact with the slip rings by means of coiled springs acting between the radially outer ends of the carbon brushes and the radially outer walls of the brush receiving chambers. The pig tails are extended into adjacent brush chambers through slits formed in the walls separating the pig tail chambers from associated brush chambers and are connected to the carbon brushes at lateral sides of the latter.

A power generation control system for a vehicle generator comprises a generator including an armature coil, an exciting coil and a rectifier for rectifying the AC output of the armature coil, a battery, and a voltage control device for controlling the activation of the generator in accordance with the terminal voltage of the battery. This power generation control system further comprises an abnormal voltage detector circuit for detecting the voltage generated across the armature coil and cutting off the current flowing in the exciting coil when said voltage exceeds a predetermined value. The abnormal voltage detector circuit has the function to hold this forcible stoppage of power generation.

A rotor of an alternating current generator has a field excitation assembly supported on a rotor shaft including a pair of rotor segments forming a cavity therein, a bobbin made of an insulating resin disposed in the cavity and a field excitation coil wound on the bobbin. The bobbin has a cylindrical portion and a pair of flanged portions at both ends thereof for forming room for the field excitation coil. On one of the flanged portion, a pair of projections are integrally formed therewith extending axially and outwardly, which are press-fitted into a pair of through holes formed on one of the rotor segments. Each of the projections is formed with not only an axially extending groove for receiving a field coil terminal, but a radially and axially extending slit communicating the outside of the projection with the groove for guiding and receiving a coil starting or terminating end of the field coil. The coil ends are hung on the field coil terminals press-fitted into the projections, whereby neither the coil starting nor terminating end is drawn back out of the bobbin even before the bobbin is assembled in the rotor segments.
