A mold comprising a cavity for defining the shape of a casting and a mold body for forming said cavity, comprising: a mold body formed of an ordinary temperature setting resin or thermosetting resin and casting sand, said mold body having a surface layer portion on the surfaces thereof including depressions, said depressions in the surface layer portion being filled up with at least one porous powdered material selected from the group consisting of hydrous magnesium silicate clay mineral, activated carbon and activated alumina, thereby providing the mold body with smooth surfaces whereby said mold generates less amount of material such as gums which cause defective castings during casting since molten metal is restrained from intruding into the walls of said mold.

Mold surface treatment process and mold

A mold surface treatment process comprises: providing a fluidized bed of a treating powder; holding the mold in the fluidized bed to fill up the depressions of the mold surfaces with the treating powder by employing a surface treating member for pushing the treating powder into the depressions; and taking the mold out of the fluidized bed. The mold surface treatment allows to make molten metal less likely penetrate into the walls of mold, and to manufacture a mold which generates less amount of gum causing defects during casting.

Molding material composed of casting sand coated with a thermosetting resin and hydrous magnesium silicate clay mineral which may be impregnated with an acid and/or coated with a thermosetting resin, and a shell mold produced from the molding material. This material and mold minimize generation of smoke and irritating gases at the time of mold making and casting.

A high speed machining controller comprises an acoustic emission sensor which is installed in or near a machine for machining a work piece in a high speed and which detects acoustic emission generated during machining a work piece; a signal processing means which is composed of a band-pass filter for passing an element of a frequency band corresponding to the acoustic emission by inputting a signal outputted from the acoustic emission sensor, a rectification circuit for rectifying a signal outputted from said band-pass filter, a peak detection circuit for detecting peak values of the signal outputted from the rectification circuit, and a smoothing circuit for smoothing output signals of said peak detection circuit and for outputting a signal corresponding to the amplitude of the acoustic emission for the purpose of processing the output signal of the acoustic emission sensor to detect its amplitude; a cutting condition discrimination means for judging the cutting condition of a work piece by comparing a detected amplitude of the acoustic emission with a predetermined discrimination value for discriminating the cutting condition of said work piece; and a control means to instruct and control the machining condition including at least the feed speed of a machine tool on the basis of the cutting condition of the work piece.

High-speed machining controller

An apparatus for discriminating a machining state from a non-machining state in a machine tool wherein a workpiece is machined with a cutting tool or grinder, comprising plural vibration sensors including at least one acoustic-emission sensor, which detect vibrations of different frequency bands, respectively, which are produced during machining of the workpiece by the tool. A discriminating device judges that the workpiece is being machined by the tool when levels of output signals generated from at least two of the vibration sensors are higher than respective predetermined threshold levels, and judges that the workpiece is not being machined by the tool when the level of an output signal generated from less than two of the vibration sensors is higher than a predetermined threshold level. Also disclosed is a method for discrimination between the machining and non-machining states.

Method and apparatus for discriminating cutting state from non-cutting

A process for ion nitriding aluminum or an aluminum alloy as an article to be treated, in which: the article is disposed in a sealed vessel; the oxygen gas in the vessel is removed; the surface of the article is heated to a prescribed nitriding temperature; the surface of the article is activated to facilitate the formation of an aluminum nitride layer by the subsequent nitriding treatment; and thereafter the article is subjected to ion nitriding, thereby forming an aluminum nitride layer having excellent wear resistance and high hardness. This ion nitriding treatment for aluminum material can be carried out even at temperatures lower than a solution treatment temperature of aluminum material.

Process for ion nitriding aluminum or aluminum alloys

A process for ion nitriding of aluminum or an aluminum alloy and an apparatus therefor, wherein aluminum or an aluminum alloy as an article to be treated is disposed on a substrate holder provided in a sealed container. A predetermined metal having an intensive affinity for oxygen is also disposed in the vicinity of the article to be treated, and a glow discharge is operated between an electrode provided in the sealed container as an anode and the substrate holder as a cathode. The electrode may be directly provided at the sealed container itself or it may be independently provided therein. According to the process and apparatus of the present invention, it is possible to form on the surface of aluminum or an aluminum alloy an aluminum nitride layer having an intensive adhesion to a substrate thereof, high hardness and excellent wear resistance.

Process for ion nitriding of aluminum or an aluminum alloy and apparatus

A converter for the purification of exhaust gases from internal combustion engines and the like which comprises a first converting layer of a catalyst of a sintered body structure selected from the group consisting of nickel oxide-copper oxide; manganese oxide-cerium oxide; manganese oxide-lanthanum oxide; manganese oxide-iron oxide; manganese oxide-niobium oxide; manganese oxide-nickel oxide; and either niobium oxide or yttrium oxide or mixtures of both with cobalt oxide; and a second converting layer of a catalyst selected from the group consisting of platinum; platinum-rhodium; platinum-palladium; and nickel oxide, chromium oxide, copper oxide, iron oxide and barium oxide; wherein the converter is constructed so that the exhaust gases pass through said first converting layer and then through said second converting layer. A copper-filled layer consisting of a copper-containing material may be further provided upstream of said first and second converting layers.

Converter for the purification of exhaust gases

An alloy of nickel-aluminum-molybdenum containing silicon in the ranges enclosed between points A (nickel--85% by weight, aluminum--5% by weight, molybdenum--10% by weight), B (nickel--75%, aluminum--15%, molybdenum--10%), C (nickel--65%, aluminum--15%, molybdenum--20%) and D (nickel--75%, aluminum--5%, molybdenum--20%) as shown in FIG. 1 and including silicon in the range of 0.1 to 3% by weight and preferably in a range of 0.5 to 2.5% by weight.
